Has there been a time in Kirby Smart’s previous nine years as head coach where his inside linebacker room has not been a position of strength?

Players like Roquan Smith, Nakobe Dean, and Jalon Walker, among many others, have been some of the best Bulldogs in recent history. This year’s group has the potential to etch their names alongside those greats before their careers are done.

Rising junior CJ Allen is the leader of the group.

Allen finished second on the team last year in tackles with 76, starting 12 of the 14 games he played.

The former Lamar County standout is the quarterback of defense, calling the defensive signals from his position at Mac.

There’s plenty of talent alongside and behind him.

Fellow junior Ralyen Wilson is expected to be the starter at Money. The Tallahassee native has a penchant for big plays, as he finished fifth on the team in tackles for loss with seven.

There’s some significant talent waiting in the wings.

Chris Cole flashed in a major way when the Bulldogs began using him in their third-down rush packages.

At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, Cole went on to be named to the SEC All-Freshman team after making 16 tackles, including two for losses of four yards with a pair of key fumble recoveries. He also broke up a pass.

There’s more.

Former five-star Justin Williams appeared in 12 games as a true freshman and is expected to work primarily behind Allen to give the Bulldogs another excellent plug-in piece to count on during games.

Redshirt freshman Kris Jones, along with true freshmen Zayden Walker and AJ Kruah, assures that the position will remain one of the strongest on the entire team.

CJ Allen

Junior

6-1/235

Look for Allen to take over much of the leadership for the entire defense. The junior has some moxie about him. Allen finished second on the team in tackles last year with 76 and it will not be a surprise to see him lead the team this fall.

Raylen Wilson

Junior

6-1/235

Wilson is a physical clone of Allen, as both are listed by UGA as having the same height and identical weight. Wilson did not start a game last year due to the presence of Smael Mondon and Jalon Walker, but he has significant onfield experience, finishing with 47 tackles.

Chris

Cole

Sophomore

6-3/235

Last fall Cole showed Georgia fans why he was a semifinalist for the High School Butkus Award as the top-ranked player from the state of Virginia. Cole flashed enough during his freshman year to hint he could one day be in the running for the same award on the college level. Look for him to take another big step, beginning this spring.

Justin

Williams

Sophomore

6-2/220

Williams played in 12 games, mostly on special teams. But make no mistake, this will be a future starter for the Bulldogs before his done. He'll prepare this spring to start receiving more reps at Mac linebacker behind CJ Allen. His career is about to take off.

Terrell Foster

Junior

6-1/220

Foster received extensive action for the Bulldogs, playing in 12 of the 14 games. Although most of his action came on special teams, he chipped in with two tackles, both in last year's opener against Clemson.

Kris Jones

Although he did not play in any games as a true freshman, Jones has tons of potential. He was ranked the No. 2 player in Virginia right behind teammate Chris Cole.

AJ Kruah

Freshman

6-2/225

Kruah played all over the field for Marietta High on both offense and defense. He'll play inside linebacker for the Bulldogs after making 46 solo tackles, including 15 for loss his senior year.

Zayden

Walker

Freshman

6-2/220

The nation's third-ranked inside linebacker prospect per Rivals, Walker's senior year at Schley County saw him lead the team with 77 tackles, including 13 for lost yardage.
