As Kirby Smart prepares for the start of his eighth season at Georgia’s helm, UGASports wants to determine the Bulldogs’ top plays thus far during the head coach’s successful tenure in Athens. For each matchup in a bracket-style tournament, UGASports staff argue for/against Georgia’s top plays since the start of the 2016 season. Subscribers vote for the top or the best of the two plays—and the play that gets the most votes moves onto the next round.
For the second matchup of the second round, we counter Stetson Bennett’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Adonai Mitchell which gave Georgia a fourth-quarter lead against Alabama for the national title; vs. the 76-yard Bennett-to-Arian Smith touchdown which got the Bulldogs back into last year’s Peach Bowl against Ohio State. #1 seed—Bennett-to-Mitchell for the Lead (2022 CFP National Championship Game vs. Alabama)
Trailing Alabama by five points with just over eight minutes remaining in the 2022 CFP National Championship Game, and facing 2nd and 18, Georgia’s Stetson Bennett lobbed a 40-yard touchdown to freshman Adonai Mitchell, who had to adjust to catch the slightly underthrown ball. The scoring play, which capped a 4-play, 75-yard drive, gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead in ultimately a 33-18 championship victory.
PATRICK: The Bennett-to-Mitchell and Bennett-to-Smith touchdowns were both critical scores for the Bulldogs resulting midway through the fourth quarters of two of the greatest victories in UGA football history. Still, while the quick strike to Smith got Georgia back into the ballgame for an opportunity to play for a national title, Bennett-to-Mitchell gave the Bulldogs a fourth-quarter, one-point advantage over Alabama—a lead they wouldn’t relinquish—in the national title game en route to their first national championship in 41 years. Simply, Bennett-to-Mitchell was more significant of a play.
#2 seed—Quick Strike to Arian Smith (2022 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl vs. Ohio State)
Trailing Ohio State by double digits in the final quarter of last season’s Peach Bowl, and in desperate need of a score, Georgia’s Stetson Bennett connected with a wide-open Arian Smith for a 76-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs added a subsequent two-point conversion and a late touchdown en route to a thrilling 42-41 win over the Buckeyes.
PAUL: Two great touchdowns, but one helped change the momentum more: the Bennett-to-Smith touchdown. The Dawgs needed the touchdown pass to Smith. They were all but out of the game before Smith burned the defensive back to get Georgia back into the contest. Yes, Mitchell’s touchdown was great, but Smith's score helped the Dawgs capture back-to-back national championships.
