MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Georgia basketball coach Mike White announced on Tuesday that he’s added former Florida Atlantic assistant Todd Abernethy to his coaching staff.
Abernethy replaces former assistant Erik Pastrana, who took at job at Miami.
“I’m incredibly excited to reunite with Coach White and to return to the SEC,” Abernethy said. “Coach White made a huge impact on me as a player and has continued to do so throughout my career. He was instrumental in my development and played a huge part in me becoming an All-SEC guard as a senior. It’s no secret that the SEC is the best league in the country, and I’m thrilled to be back.”
An assistant with the Owls since 2019, Abernethy is no stranger to White. Like White, Abernethy played his college ball at Ole Miss, where he earned All-SEC honors in 2006-2007, after averaging 12.3 points per game.
In 2004-2005, Abernethy was the SEC’s Sixth Man of the Year.
Before coming to FAU, Abernethy served as the head coach at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois.
Before that, he worked as an assistant at Ole Miss for four years.
At FAU, in 2022-2023, Abernethy helped lead the Owls to what’s been called the greatest season in program history in 2022-23. FAU qualified for the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history and advanced all the way to the Final Four.
The Owls had the most wins in all of NCAA Division I basketball, with a record of 35-4.
FAU was only three wins shy of the single-season Division I record. Florida Atlantic won both the Conference USA Tournament and the Regular Season Championship, marking the program's firsts. That season included a 20-game winning streak, which at the time was the longest in the nation and currently stands as the third-longest streak in C-USA history. The Owls' 18 conference wins are the most in C-USA history, and FAU also went an undefeated 17-0 at home, also for the first time in school history.
