Georgia head coach Kirby Smart met with the media on April 1. Here are the key points from his press conference.
Smart said his biggest takeaway from the team's first scrimmage was that the Bulldogs still have a long way to go. He once again emphasized that the team has more new people in new positions that at any point during his Georgia tenure, which leads to no assumptions as far as what people do or don't know.
Punter Brett Thorson is still recovering from his torn ACL. Smart believes he will be ready for the season opener, but not necessarily for the beginning of fall camp.
Offensive lineman Drew Bobo had a hyperextended knee in the scrimmage and missed practice today, but he should be back soon.
Freshman defensive end Isaiah Gibson has "a little bit of an injury", but Smart thinks he'll be back soon.
Both Zachariah and Zion Branch both love football, but are adjusting to the speed and volume of practice in Athens. They are getting better and better with every practice. Smart added that Zachariah Branch is still earning his place as a leader on the team and on the offense as a receiver.
Smart saw some explosive runs during Saturday's scrimmage. He felt that the defense's energy and passion were ahead of the offense's, but he noted that the offense did very well in the red zone.
Offensive lineman Earnest Greene is wearing a club on one hand as he deals with a dislocated finger. But he is still practicing hard and tried to play very hard and lead during the scrimmage.
Freshman quarterback Ryan Montgomery still hasn't done much as he recovers from a torn ACL. He is throwing some during ball drills to receivers, but Smart isn't judging him much on that.
Star Joenel Aguero is getting better every day and is getting more vocal, something that is difficult for him as a quiet guy. Smart has also seen "flashes" from transfer safeties Jaden Harris and Adrian Maddox. As for returning defensive back Kyron Jones, Smart called him a tough player who is a "thumper" and plays hard, but he has to keep getting better.
Smart has been impressed with some of the younger defensive linemen this spring, players such as Nnamdi Ogboko, Jordan Thomas, and Nasir Johnson. He feels those players have seen the track record of development and are continuing to work hard to meet that standard.
