Isaiah Wynn's absence tests different options for UGA

Left tackle Isaiah Wynn is out with an illness head coach Kirby Smart confirmed after practice Tuesday afternoon.

He was not sure how long the senior would be out.

"We just kind of took their helmets from them so they couldn't go," said Smart regarding the absence of Wynn along with Michail Carter, who also has been out of practice with an illness. Smart added the absence of Wynn has allowed him and offensive line coach Sam Pittman to give other players looks at different spots.

"One guy who we know what he can do is him (Wynn)," Smart continued. "I think with him out, it allows us to move guys around and we did that throughout practice."

Freshman Andrew Thomas is getting a long look.

Although the former Pace Academy star was seen playing left guard during the media's brief viewing time on Monday and Tuesday, Smart said Thomas has also received looks at left and right tackle, along with guard.

But he's still got a lot of work to do.

"He's not ready to help out right now, but he is an extremely mature kid. He studies hard, he's very serious and he's very business like. He's got a great approach to the game. But we don't have a guy ready right now," Smart said. "It's practice eight. It's hard to say we've got the older linemen exactly ready, the guys that started out there because they had 15 practices in the spring. They're still ahead, but some of those younger guys are catching up quick. I would say that Andrew is one of the guys who is catching up quick because he has the athletic ability to play multiple positions being inside and outside."

A former four-star performer, Thomas is listed at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds on Georgia's fall roster following a senior season at Pace where Rivals ranked him as the nation's 1oth-best offensive tackle and 88th-best overall player in the entire country.

"We think he's a future left tackle," Smart said of Thomas. "That's what we think he is, but we have to play our best players and if that means he's there, we think he's got a little more size to him than Isaiah Wynn, and Wynn played some guard there last year. We didn't get a whole lot of movement, but Isaiah did a really good job out at tackle. So, we feel like Andrew can help us some at guard. But Andrew is going to be the left tackle as well."

Just maybe not quite yet.

"He may even have to be the right tackle, so he's a guy who is going to be a moving part, as well as (Justin) Shaffer, as well as Pat (Allen), as well as a couple of other guys. (Aulden) Bynum has done a good job in there, and Ben's (Cleveland) gotten better," Smart continued. "We just need to get better across the board and, hey, they're going against a good defensive front, too. Those guys are playing hard."

Speaking of Cleveland, with Dyshon Sims now working at left tackle in the absence of Wynn, Smart confirmed the Toccoa native has been getting first team reps at right tackle.

But like most other positions on the team, that doesn't mean a whole lot right now.

"It says he's the right tackle as of today, practice eight is all it says. He's got to get better. We expect more from him. We're searching for a right tackle. Dyshon was probably playing better than him," Smart said. "But Ben has a lot of potential. He's got great size, so does Isaiah Wilson, but neither one are playing up to the standards that we expect right now. So, we've got to keep growing in all those areas."

Wilson continues to work at right tackle alongside Cleveland and Allen, who is working with the second group at the position.

Smart also said that Kendall Baker and Solomon Kindley have rotated between left and right guard, along with Shaffer and Netori Johnson.

Smart did not mention junior-college transfer D'Markus Hayes, although he continues to work with the second unit at left tackle.

"We've always said that we want to play the best five guys who will give us the best opportunity to win. That may not be the same Game 1 as it will be Games 2, 3, 4 and 5," Smart said. "So, when we make those decisions based on down the road, who's going to be the best guy down the road. It doesn't mean that guy may start, very similar to Jacob (Eason) and Greyson (Lambert) last year. We're trying to decide who's going to be the best guy down the road. That doesn't mean that guy's going to start right away. It means that guy is going to be ready to play and he's going to be developed."

Just don't ask him to predict the future.

"It's so early to tell," Smart said. "We haven't even scrimmaged yet. After the first scrimmage, we'll know a lot more."
