The way ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. sees it, the Chicago Bears might have a decision to make between a couple of former Georgia teammates.
That's assuming Chicago takes a quarterback in the second round.
During a Wednesday teleconference with reporters, Kiper Jr. cited both Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm as two quarterbacks the Bears could consider with either of their two second-round picks (46 and 49).
The Bears currently have three quarterbacks on their roster, Nick Foles, Mitch Trubisky and Tyler Bray, and are thought to be in the market for another.
Kiper said both Eason and Fromm could fit the bill.
“It depends on the quarterbacks you have and who do you like in the second round. Do you like Jacob Eason from Washington enough? Jacob Eason had struggled late in games, he’s inconsistent but he’s got a rocket arm. He’s got size–imposing size,” Kiper Jr. said. “Jake Fromm from Georgia? Do you think his arm is strong enough? Does it skew some of the things that went on, like his touchdown numbers coming down because he lost his top-four receiver, his tight end, a 1000-yard rusher and his center?
“Those are all reasons to give Jake Fromm the benefit of the doubt to take him in the second round.”
Kiper’s comments come on the heels of recently published stories, including one by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, who reported that he’s starting to hear some “buzz” surrounding Fromm based on interviews he’s had with respective teams.
This has come after all the talk at the NFL Combine seemed to focus on Fromm’s lack of hand size and arm strength.
According to most draft boards, Fromm has typically been ranked seventh among eligible quarterbacks in the NFL Draft behind Joe Burrow, Tua Tagoailoa, Justin Herbert Love, Eason and Jalen Hurt, who Kiper Jr. also sees a potential fit for the Bears.
“I think Fromm from Georgia and when I think of Eason from Washington,” Kiper Jr. said. “I think those would be the two, with Jalen Hurts one of those wildcards that I put in the second because of the way that, say Lamar Jackson, has sort of opened that door. It’s a copy-cat league.”
NOTE: During his hour-long teleconference, Kiper Jr. also had a few words to say about former Bulldog safety J.R. Reed. According to Kiper, he could see Reed going in the third round to the New England Patriots.
