What the Georgia players have said about Gunner Stockton

Georgia has yet to officially name a starting quarterback. However, after a few weeks of players meeting with the media, there seems to be an obvious leader.

Zachariah Branch, a former freshman All-American who, along with his brother Zion, transferred to Georgia this offseason from USC, made his decision to move to Athens with a quarterback in mind.

Although Branch admittedly did not know much about Georgia’s offense, specifically the quarterback situation, Gunner Stockton caught Branch’s attention during the recruiting process.

“I just saw that he came in in that SEC Championship game, and he did his thing,” Branch said of Stockton. “So, I saw that, and I was like, okay. I watched him throughout the practices when I came up here on the visit, and I just saw his work ethic and his fire in practice. You know, that's something that caught my eye as well.”

Then, since joining the program, Branch’s evaluation of Stockton has only grown.

“Gunner Stockton, I knew he was a dog since we started off in the workouts,” Branch said. “You know, I can tell easily from the work ethic and how you prepare yourself to go out there and be the best version of yourself. I can definitely tell that he was really trying to compete every rep.”

But it isn’t just Branch who is noticing. Even Dillon Bell lauded Stockton publicly when he spoke Tuesday.

“I see a lot more talkative Gunner, he's very mature,” Bell said. “He's taking action, he's being a leader, he's putting guys where they need to be. I like what I'm seeing from him.”

Even head coach Kirby Smart praised Stockton for that leadership in his opening press conference of the spring.

“Yeah, he's a tremendous leader, but that’s nothing I didn't already know,” Smart said. “He's done everything right since he's been here.… He earns people's respect by how he works and how he carries himself. He's got a tremendous amount of confidence in his ability.

“He's got a lot of knowledge of our system. And I think that kind of resonates with the other players. They rally around Gunner because they have a lot of respect for him.”

While Stockton may not officially be Georgia’s quarterback yet, it certainly hasn’t stopped the redshirt junior from rallying support from his teammates.

“He's been killing it,” Lawson Luckie said. “I'm super proud of Gunner. I'm excited to see what he can do. And he's just a great leader. He's super consistent. He makes every play you need him to make. And he always knows what's going on. He's never, he's like, he's unprepared. The dude loves ball, and people love playing with him.”
