What's next for the Dawgs?

While the loss to Georgia Tech won’t be forgotten anytime soon, Georgia, its coaches and players have no choice but to move on.

There's definitely work to be done.

"To the fans, I'm just as sick as you are," head coach Kirby Smart said after the game. "I'm just as upset as you are and I'm just as disappointed as you are. We've got to do a better job. We recognize that - and we will."

So, what does the future hold?

As far as Smart and his staff go, many fans on message boards and social media have been clamoring for the first-year head coach to make some sort of coaching change, specifically as it pertains to offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

While Chaney’s performance is certainly up for debate, the only inkling so far that Smart may need to find another assistant comes from Saturday night’s tweet by Dan Wolken of USA Today in which he states that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is being considered for the head coaching job at Georgia State.

Otherwise, the Bulldogs (7-5) know they will have another game to play once the bowl matchups are announced after Saturday’s SEC Championship.

The more immediate question is where will Georgia play that game.

Despite its loss to the Yellow Jackets, Georgia’s bowl situation probably didn’t change all that much, if at all.

From what we’re hearing, the Music City Bowl in Nashville (Dec. 30) is still believed to be the most-likely destination, with the Belk Bowl (Dec. 29), Liberty Bowl (Dec. 30), Independence Bowl (Dec. 26) and Birmingham Bowl (Dec. 29) possibilities as well.

Bowls like the Independence and Belk Bowl each have tie-ins with the ACC, which begs the question: could the Bulldogs be matched up against Miami and former head coach Mark Richt?

While it would seem neither team would want such a game after Richt’s dismissal, running back Sony Michel was asked about a matchup against the Hurricanes.

“I don’t think it would be hard (on the players),” Michel said. “It’s football. We wouldn’t be playing against Coach Richt. “It would be against the guys in front of us.”

But until Georgia’s bowl opponent is announced, 100 percent of the focus for Smart and his assistants will be on recruiting, which is obviously imperative if he wants to get the Bulldog program back to where he says it will be.

“Recruiting is the lifeblood of our program. We have good players now and we’ll continue to recruit good players,” Smart said. “We’ll relentlessly go out the next two weeks to try and get the right kind of young men to come to the University of Georgia. We’ll attack it hard.”
