Top Dawgs honored

Junior quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., junior linebacker Jarvis Jones of Columbus, junior linebacker Alec Ogletree of Newnan, Ga., redshirt sophomore safety Connor Norman of Duluth, and junior cornerback Blake Sailors of Athens took home the top awards at the University of Georgia football annual team Gala Saturday night at the Classic Center in Athens.
Murray and Jones were named recipients of the Vince Dooley Most Valuable Players of the Year Award, Murray was named the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player, and Jones and Ogletree shared Most Valuable Defensive Player honors. Norman and Sailors were named Most Valuable Special Teams players. Richard Samuel of Cartersville and senior defensive end Abry Jones of Warner Robins were named winners of the David Jacobs Award as the players who, by example, portray courage, spirit, character and determination.

Jones was also named the team's overall permanent captain for 2012. Murray and senior wide receiver Tavarres King of Mount Airy were elected as the team's offensive captains, senior safety Shawn Williams of Damascus was chosen as the defensive captain, and senior snapper Ty Frix was named the special teams captain.
The Leon Farmer Award for dedication to the strength and conditioning program was presented to Murray and sophomore center David Andrews of Johns Creek. Outstanding Scout Team Awards went to redshirt sophomore fullback Corey Campbell of Hephzibah, senior fullback Dustin Royston of Royston, freshman quarterback Faton Bauta of West Palm Beach, Fla., junior cornerback Luis Capella of Augusta and redshirt sophomore safety Lucas Redd of Jefferson.
Most Improved Player Awards were presented to junior tight end Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass., fullback Alexander Ogletree of Newnan, sophomore defensive back Damian Swann of Atlanta and sophomore safety Corey Moore of Griffin.
Newcomer of the Year Award winners were freshman tailback Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C., freshman tailback Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., freshman linebacker Jordan Jenkins of Hamilton, freshman cornerback Sheldon Dawson of Memphis and freshman punter Collin Barber of Cartersville.
Coaches Leadership Awards went to Andrews, Murray, Williams and redshirt sophomore linebacker Kosta Vavlas of Tarpon Springs, Fla.
The Charley Trippi Most Versatile Award was presented to sophomore wide receiver/defensive back Malcolm Mitchell of Valdosta, while the Frank Sinkwich Toughness Award was presented to Williams.
The Governor's Cup trophy for the victory over Georgia Tech was officially presented by Shelton Stevens from Healthcare of Atlanta.
