Tight end FitzPatrick to work with Jim Chaney

Georgia tight end signee John FitzPatrick was taken by surprise when his future position coach, Shane Beamer, announced he was leaving for Oklahoma. But FitzPatrick didn’t fret. In fact, he took to Twitter to publicly wish Beamer good luck with the Sooners.

“He definitely deserves it,” FitzPatrick said.

The suddenness of the announcement raised a few eyebrows as it was quite unexpected, yet Beamer did warn FitzPatrick something was coming.

“I talked with him the morning of (the announcement) and then I talked with him around four o’clock,” FitzPatrick said. “In the morning he told me about his opportunity but didn’t say what he was doing and later that gat he told me what he was doing, that he loved recruiting me and stuff like that.”

Fellow tight end signee Luke Ford was quite surprised though.

“I stay in contact with Luke Ford a bunch,” FitzPatrick said. “I talked to him two nights ago. We had a long talk about what was going on. I took my official visit the week before and he took his official the week after. I think the next day he learned about Coach Beamer, so he didn’t really see it coming at all. I think he said he had been told some stuff and whatnot. I don’t know the whole situation.”

With Beamer gone, FitzPatrick expects to work more closely with Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

“I love Coach Chaney,” FitzPatrick said. “He’s a fantastic coach. I spent a lot of time with him on my official visit and throughout the whole process. So, I am really excited to get to work with him.”

Chaney will have a lot to work with in the Marist High School star. Standing at 6-foot-6, FitzPatrick tips the scales these days at 245 pounds.

“I think I am done growing,” FitzPatrick said. “Hopefully I can grow out more, grow wider, just thicker and faster.”

FitzPatrick said the Georgia coaches do not have a size goal for him, they just want him to be “as fast as possible.”
