Junior defensive tackle Trenton Thompson will miss the Vanderbilt game with a sprained MCL, head coach Kirby Smart said during Monday’s press conference to preview Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt (Noon, ESPN).

"He'll be out for this game but it wasn't as bad as we originally thought," Smart said. "Basically after this game. it will be week to week."

Thompson suffered the injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s 41-0 rout of Tennessee, when he was immediately taken to the locker room for examination.

He later returned to the sideline.

Through five games, Thompson leads all Bulldog defensive linemen with 17 tackles, including three for losses of six yards.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, depth at defensive line is one of the team's bigger strengths.

“We rolled a lot of guys last year and now they’re a year older. They’re a year more mature," Smart said. "All of those freshmen that had to play last year, it’s paying off a lot now."

For example:

"Tyler Clark is playing better than he did last year--he’s grown up a year. Julian Rochester is playing better. Those guys have grown up and played more. With Trenton out, it’s going to put a little more pressure on Michail Carter to play a little more. David Marshall will play a little more," Smart said. "Tyler will take on a few more snaps. We are going to continue to sub guys. Michael Barnett and DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle will get a few looks.”
