Here is the June 2 edition of The Daily Recap presented by My Perfect Franchise.
Financial decision
Kirby Smart has long expressed his desire for Georgia and Florida to play their rivalry as a home and home series. And while Jacksonville's EverBank Stadium undergoes renovations beginning next year, it made some sense for the two teams to play in Athens and Gainesville, much like they did in a similar scenario in the 1990s.
However, it was decided that the two teams would play in Atlanta in 2026 and Tampa in 2027. Smart explained why this decision was reached.
"That was an AD decision," Smart said on SiriusXM. "It ultimately came based on money. And, you know, the (Mercedes-Benz Stadium) and Tampa both ponied up and made really good financial offers."
While Smart has previously expressed his desire to play the game on campus for recruiting purposes, the numbers are staggering monetarily. Georgia will receive a $7.5 million payday to play the game in Atlanta from Arthur Blank's company, per Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald.
Once the rivalry returns to Jacksonville, each team will receive $10 million each in 2028 and 2029, and $10.5 million each in 2030 and 2031.
Simply put, money talks, and there's no reason to give up that big of a check.
Heartbreak at Foley Field
Everything seemed set up for a deep postseason run. Georgia earned the No. 7 national seed and hosted a regional in Athens.
However, what could've been a dream season ended abruptly in a heartbreaking 11-9 loss against Oklahoma State on Sunday. The Bulldogs were up two entering the final half-inning before succumbing to a walk-off defeat.
“I'm heartbroken. None of us saw this coming,” Slate Alford said. “We planned on playing for a long time. It didn't happen.”
