Keys for the rest of the season

With Georgia still unbeaten, Anthony Dasher compiled a list of what Georgia needs to do to be successful for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Here’s what he came up with:

Be successful running the football: Cliche to be sure, but whatever success Georgia has offensively the rest of the year will depend on its ability to run the football. For the Bulldogs to successfully go play-action in the passing game, it’s going to be a must.

Props to Daijun Edwards, who has done a fine job, but he’s going to need some help. Milton should be that guy as long as he can stay healthy. Will we start to see even more of Dillon Bell in the backfield? Does Mike Bobo have more tricks up his sleeve for how to utilize him?

Hit some deep balls: The Bulldogs haven’t converted the number of deep balls we thought they would. It’s not as if the opportunities haven't been there. But between overthrows by Carson Beck and mistakes by receivers, there have been a few too many misses.

Georgia must hit some of these plays to live up to its true offensive potential.

Create more turnovers: It’s amazing, but the Bulldogs enter their game against Florida with zero forced fumbles to start the year. Georgia does lead the SEC with nine interceptions, but the fact Georgia’s defense is not forcing the ball from opposing ball carriers is a trend that Smart wants to see come to an end.

Get more sacks: Smart does not appear to be as concerned about this as fans. His opinion is the one that counts, after all. While Georgia has faced a number of quarterbacks who like to get the ball out quickly, 12 sacks in seven games is likely not the total Smart was hoping for.

Beck’s homecoming

Beck is returning home when Georgia takes on Florida this weekend in Jacksonville. Beck played high school football at Mandarin High in Jacksonville.

“Obviously, it’s super cool,” Beck said. “The last time I played there I was 11 years old, for the city championship. Going back there, to play in my hometown, to play in the Georgia-Florida game, a huge rivalry, is going to be fun.”

Through seven games, head coach Kirby Smart has been pleased with Beck’s first season as the program’s starter.

"He plays very consistently, winning football when he plays within the system. I think sometimes when he tries too much, he gets himself in trouble,” Smart said. “But he's played at a really high level to me, like a 90-percent success rate, and keeping a 10-percent from being catastrophic is critical. That's the ones you want to get back. If you can take that 10 percent and throw them away to keep his 90 percent and his accuracy, we're going to be good offensively when he's good."
