The Daily Recap: A change of plans for UGA football

Here is the Dec. 5 edition of The Daily Recap presented by JFQ Lending.

Game postponed

With a little more than 24 hours before kickoff, it was announced that Georgia and Vanderbilt will not play Saturday’s game at Sanford Stadium. Anthony Dasher spoke with athletics director Greg McGarity, who figured the game was on track to play after making it to Friday morning with no negative updates.

"To be on a call at 11 a.m., 11:30 when there’s no word earlier, you feel like if you get to Friday morning, or close to Friday noon with no news, no news is usually good news," McGarity said. "In this case no news was bad news."

The reason for the cancellation is that Vanderbilt fell below the minimum roster requirements as it pertains to the SEC’s Covid-19 protocol. The game is tentatively rescheduled for Dec. 19. If Georgia qualifies for the SEC Championship, which is scheduled for the same day, then the game against Vanderbilt will be canceled.

McGarity didn’t mince words when it came to the timing of the game being called off.

"We're all beat up, we’re all tired of this, and to have the rug pulled out from underneath you so close to game day, is just frustrating," McGarity said. "I feel so sorry for our coaches, our players and our support staff. They’ve proven that you can deal with Covid effectively if you follow the guidelines that Ron (Courson) and Kirby (Smart) have preached to these young men, and these young men have listened, and they really avoided Covid all fall.

"Really, the only reward for that is their own health. Unfortunately, there’s not a reward on the flip side from the competitive standpoint. So, we’re having to adjust schedules because others struggle in handling their affairs on campus."

In related news, Georgia’s game against Missouri has been rescheduled for next Saturday.

Hoops team gets another win

For the third time in a row, Georgia guard Sahvir Wheeler recorded a double-double. In doing so, he helped lead the men's basketball team to a 98-65 win over Jacksonville.

Wheeler scored 21 points and dished out 10 assists in the victory.

“It’s just a product of the offense, constantly pushing the pace, keep making plays and make sure the open guy gets the ball,” Wheeler said. “Those 10 assists, those back-to-back-to back double-double games, that’s all a credit to them.”

It is believed that Wheeler is the first player in SEC history to record 10 assists in three consecutive games.

“He’s a charismatic kid, he’s a leader, and he’s growing in his leadership all the time,” head coach Tom Crean said. “In football, you cannot have a moody quarterback, you cannot have a moody catcher in baseball, and you cannot have a moody point guard. You want to have someone who gets people and excited and want to be around him, and Sahvir is that.”

The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 with the win.

Snap count

With no game on Saturday, let’s take a look back at the snap counts from Georgia’s win over South Carolina. Trent Smallwood compiled each player’s snap count from those who appeared in the game.

On offense, quarterback JT Daniels was the only one to play every single snap, even though the game was a blowout. On defense, defensive backs Lewis Cine and Christopher Smith played 64 snaps each, which amounted to 97 percent of the plays.

Stats crunch

Although the Georgia-Vanderbilt game has been postponed, there are still some stats worth checking out from Dave McMahon’s story. One noteworthy stat is how each of Georgia’s running backs have performed on a per quarter basis.

Cottrell feeling the love from SEC teams

A number of SEC teams have shown interest in class of 2023 receiver Raymond Cottrell (Milton/Pensacola, Fla.), including Georgia.

"Georgia is just a good place,” Cottrell told Chad Simmons. “It is a great school and the people there really make it feel like family. The coaches knew me, they treated me well and coach Kirby Smart really impressed me when I was there. I love his energy."
