Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason isn’t buying what Kirby Smart is trying to sell regarding who the 5th-ranked Bulldogs will start at quarterback in Saturday’s game against the Commodores (Noon, ESPN).

During his weekly press conference, Mason joked that he didn’t believe Smart hadn’t made up his mind.

“He’s not fooling me,” Mason said while smiling. “Let’s quit with the coaching dramatics.”

Smart wouldn’t say Mason was correct when asked about the comments after practice Tuesday afternoon.

“Derek Mason is entitled to his opinion,” Smart said. “But he’s not at our practices, he doesn’t watch our practice tape that I know of, so I’m not really concerned with those comments.”

Instead, Smart insists that both Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason are continuing to compete for the starting quarterback job, despite the fact the freshman has Georgia perfect at 5-0.

“They’ve both been great. They understand the situation. We have talked to them and explained the situation. They both completely understand. They see it from our perspective, the team’s perspective, the team goals, and the team focus,” Smart said. “As long as that’s put first, then all the right decisions are made based off that. They realize that and those decisions are made based on practice. Both those guys are mature and understand exactly what we’re doing and they’ve responded well in practice.”
