It is time for Clean Old-Fashioned Hate! Memories of Theron Sapp and Reggie Ball abound. Time for flashbacks of Erk Russell and Joe Tereshinski II firing up the team. Running the state, flag boys and deflated bees! Stories are told to kids of Buck Belue in 1978 and Mike Bobo to Corey Allen in 1997! Relive blowouts in 2002 and nail biters with Kanon Parkman’s clutch knuckler of a kick! Legends like Dan Magill and Loran Smith paint word pictures that you want to hear again and again! It is all of that and so much more…
With all that in mind, here are some gems that you will probably not find anywhere else and if you like these you can follow me on Twitter, @dave_mc_stats.
•• Nick Chubb is in fourth place all-time of Georgia’s career list. He only needs 38 yards to tie Garrison Hearst for third place and 91 yards to tie Todd Gurley for second place. I decided to give you the top four plus how many yards these backs had against Georgia Tech in their career.
•• By the way if you count the bowl stats for Herschel Walker which officially they don’t, he has more career yards rushing than Nick Chubb and Sony Michel combined. (5,596 to 5,348).
•• Nick Chubb has 900 yards this season, so he needs an even 100 to reach 1,000. He has had two straight 100 yard rushing games in a row and 17 overall in his career. He is currently in third place in Georgia history in that category and needs one more to be tied for second. Here is how many the top 4 have in this category and how many they had against the Yellow Jackets.
•• Like I said above, Chubb needs 100 yards to reach 1,000. It will be the second time he has reached 1,000 yards rushing in a season. Only Herschel Walker and Knowshon Moreno have ever had more than 1,000 yard rushing seasons. Many have come close, but injuries, suspensions, sharing playing time and other things prevented players in accomplishing this feat.
•• Speaking of Walker the Georgia legend had nine touchdown rushes against Georgia Tech in three seasons.
•• Besides the touchdown run last week, Chubb also had a touchdown reception. His 49-yard touchdown reception was his longest of his career. It was also the second time in his career that he had at least one touchdown run and one touchdown reception in the same game. Teammate Isaiah McKenzie did it earlier this season against Missouri, but over the last twenty seasons only three Georgia players have had done this feat more than once. Here are those three…
•• Sony Michel accomplished that feat once against South Carolina in 2015. Michel is mostly known for running and that is what he has been doing. He currently stands in 13th place all-time on Georgia’s career yards rushing list. Here are players 10 through 13.
•• Michel’s high school teammate, Isaiah McKenzie showed some big moves against the Ragin’ Cajuns, especially early in the game. “The Human Joystick” had a 55-yard touchdown rush and an 82-yard punt return for touchdown in the game’s first six and a half minutes. He became the first SEC player to have a touchdown rush for at least 50 yards and a punt return for touchdown of at least 50 yards in the same game since Kevin Faulk last did it for LSU in 1998 against Arkansas State (Faulk did it in 1996, too).
The 82-yard punt return was the longest of his career. McKenzie now has the most punt return for touchdowns in Georgia history and is tied for third all-time in the SEC.
•• McKenzie now has six career touchdown receptions, five career punt returns for touchdown, four career touchdown rushes and one kickoff return for a touchdown. Over the last 20 seasons, McKenzie is one of four NCAA players to have at least four touchdown rushes, four touchdown receptions and four punt return touchdowns in their career. Another crazy fact of these players is that they are all listed at 5’8”. Anyway here are those players…
•• Jacob Eason continues to climb charts of his own. His 2,127 yards passing this season is the fourth highest among any Georgia freshman. Here is that top five plus what they did against Georgia Tech their freshman season.
•• Georgia’s defense wasn’t as stout versus ULL as it was against Auburn, but they did pick off the ball three times. It was the second time this season that Georgia has had three interceptions in a game. They had three interceptions in a game just two times in the three previous seasons.
•• Speaking of interceptions… the Dawg defense has 14 interceptions and of those 14 they are divided equally by seven defenders with two apiece. Maurice Smith, Dominick Sanders, Deandre Baker, Juwan Briscoe, Quincy Mauger, Aaron Davis and Malkom Parrish have two each. Last season, Georgia had just three players with multiple interceptions. Over the last twenty seasons no Bulldog teams have had more than five different players with interceptions, until this season. Here are the most in the last twenty seasons.
•• Speaking of Kirby Smart, this is his first time facing Georgia Tech as a head coach. Here are the previous four full-time head coaches and how they fared against their in-state rival.
•• Here are those same four head coaches and their career record against Georgia Tech as a Georgia head coach (CMR defeated them again this season with Miami).
•• The Yellow Jackets are the team that the Bulldogs have defeated the most throughout the years. Here are the four teams that Georgia has defeated the most.
•• Here is one more thing on Kirby Smart and facing Georgia Tech. As a player, Smart had 16 tackles against the Yellow Jackets including 11 as a senior in 1998. He also had a sack and interception in the 1996 game.
