Not over yet for four star LB

One of the top prospects in Georgia from last year's class, Cook County linebacker Shannon Brown made an early commitment to Alabama. But the University of Georgia never stopped recruiting the 6-foot-1, 228-pound four star target. That effort may still pay off.

Brown made the decision in January to enroll at East Mississippi Community College in an effort to get a head start on junior college. If he does what he needs to for three semesters, he has been told he will be able to enroll in the four year program of his choice earlier than usual.

"It went good grade wise," said Brown. "I got all 18 credits this semester. I had a 3.06 and I enroll in a Division 1 college next summer."

But after a semester in Scooba, Mississippi, Brown felt a change was needed.

"You know just being away from home, really I just wanted to be closer to home," explained Brown. "I called and asked GMC (Georgia Military College) about it, and they told me if I wanted to go to GMC, I had a scholarship waiting for me and this summer I just made it official."

Brown also made the decision to end his commitment to Alabama.

"They told me they were still going to recruit me and I told them they were still number one on my list you know. I just want to reopen my recruiting and look at other schools," revealed Brown. "I still got a good relationship (with Alabama), I don't talk to them as much, but nothing went wrong."

Speculation has been rampant over the last few months that the former four star prospect's decision to transfer schools was tied into a change in his post junior college plans. While Brown acknowledged his contact with Georgia, he is not ready to close the book on his recruitment just yet.

"Yes sir, I have talked to Coach Todd Grantham and them about it but as far as telling them I am coming to Georgia, I have not done that," said Brown. "There are only two, Alabama and Georgia. Alabama is the No. 1 school, but coaches at Georgia, like Coach Grantham, would be No. 1."

The Adel standout admits that although he likes the head coaches at both institutions, he has had more opportunities to connect with the Crimson Tide's Head Coach because of his early intentions to play for Alabama.

"I have talked to Coach Nick Saban a couple more times than with Coach (Mark) Richt, probably because I was committed. Coach Saban, I love that guy. I went to a camp there my upcoming senior year and he was cussing me out and talking to me like I was already in crimson gear. Coach Richt, I talk to him a couple times. He is a soft-spoken guy; I like him."

The Bulldogs' defensive coordinator has been building a reputation as a persistent recruiter since his arrival in Athens, and Brown did nothing to squelch that notion

"Me and him have spent a lot of time together; he came to one of my games and I don't know how many times he has come to the school. We just got a relationship," said Brown. "He is relentless, he is my type of guy, and we are both all about winning, (We) love defense and love football."

The bond between Brown and Grantham has been strengthened with the high value placed on Georgia having a player of Brown's caliber joining the Bulldogs in the near future.

"Coach Todd Grantham and I, when we get on the phone we talk about anything, really. We talk forever. He just tells me about what I am to the defense, what I could be to the team and what I could bring on the field and off the field," said Brown.

Although the Crimson Tide have often been mentioned by the hard hitting linebacker as favorites, the Brown household thinks highly of Georgia. With other talented linebackers like T.J. Stripling, Alec Ogletree, Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson already on campus, as well as four star linebacker Leonard Floyd currently committed, Brown feels like he could be the missing piece the Bulldogs need to bring home a title.

"Me and my whole family grew up fans of Georgia. It would mean a lot to them. But if I go to Georgia, I want to win a BCS national championship. I want to be t."

On Tuesday, UGASports featured Cook County linebacker Travin Henry, an emerging athlete who has camped at Georgia twice in hopes of earning an offer. Both Henry and Brown admit their recruitment could be greatly affected if the 6-foot-3, 213-pound rising senior was awarded an athletic scholarship by Georgia.

"(Travin Henry) Thats my guy I mean I saw him grown up when I was a sophomore and he was a freshman," said Brown. "He said if he got an offer from Georgia and I go to Georgia that is where he is going to go. That wouldnt be a two for one deal because he has got the grades and he can play on the field."

With plans to try and enroll at the school of his choice next summer, Henry is hoping to make a decision in the next five months.

"Probably after this football season. December. I am not one of these guys that is going to wait till February. The second I know, they will," said Brown.
