Being that Nick Chubb is kept away from the media while he recovers from major knee surgery, teammate Sony Michel has become somewhat of his personal spokesman whenever questions arise regarding Chubb's recovery.
“He’s doing good. He’s getting better ... every day and he’s moving a lot faster than you’d probably think – than I would think, too,” Michel said after practice Thursday. “He’s looking good.”
How good?
Chubb has been working out since the start of spring camp, even wearing full pads with the rest of the team, but hasn’t and won't take part in any contact until later this fall.
Michel concedes Chubb is itching to get back on the field.
“He is, but he knows it’s a process, he’s being patient with it,” Michel said. “He’s ready to be back on the field but he knows the process is all about working hard every day. It’s another chance to get that leg ready and get back on the field.”
Although Chubb isn’t getting any contact, he’s already cutting and changing direction during run-polish drills, which Michel said is a huge step.
“He’s like ‘wow, I can’t slow down,’” said Michel, who noted he’s proud of the way Chubb has handled his rehab.
“There’s always an eager side to be back on the football field, playing, doing what you love, but he’s very mature and he knows it’s a process,” Michel said. “He knows he’s going to be back, so when that time comes he’ll be ready to take advantage of it.”
Michel said he can’t wait to see for himself.
“I’m very eager. That’s another body, an opportunity for other backs to get rest,” Michel said. “Once he does, everything will be back to normal.”
When reminded that Chubb is not just another back, Michel smiled.
“I mean, of course, it’s Nick Chubb,” he said. “It will be a special body coming back but I believe the more backs you have, the better it’s going to be.”
