Javon Wims will tell you he had the opportunity to sign with just about any school that he wanted to.

But when it came to the different offenses many of those programs happened to run, the fact Georgia was keeping its pro-style approach under new head coach Kirby Smart was ultimately what helped convince him that Athens would be the perfect home.

“I hate the spread,” Wims said in a telephone interview with UGASports.com. “Anyone who likes the spread is not a student of the game. Spread receivers typically haven’t done that well in the NFL. Here, the receivers run different routes; you’ve got to learn everything from different progressions at a different level in a pro-style offense, plus it fits my size, my body and my game style.”

At 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Wims figures to fit into what offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has in mind just fine.

“I’m not a super-fast guy. I’m more of a possession receiver and I enjoy moving the sticks,” added Wims, who added he’s also excited about having the opportunity to block on the perimeter for the likes of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb.

“I look forward to blocking for those guys,” Wims said. “It’s something that I hope is going to help me when hopefully I have the opportunity to go the NFL. With my resume, I think that’s something – my blocking – that can help separate me.”

Wims, who attended last week’s G-Day game, liked what he saw from his future teammates, especially on the offensive side.

While in Athens, Wims also spent time with Chaney and future his position coach James Coley, who gave Wims his final marching orders before arriving back with the rest of the 2016 Class in early June.

“The offense did a lot better than what I thought coming in, especially with everyone learning a new system. They did a lot better than I thought they would,” said Wims, who is finishing up classes at Hinds Community College. “That just shows how great the coaches are.”

He obviously paid very close attention to how the receivers were being used.

“I just like how they’re starting to spread the ball out a little bit more. Receivers are making plays, and I like the way I can come in and fit into the overall team,” Wims said. “Like I said, I didn’t like the spread offenses of the teams that were recruiting me; a pro-style offense is what Georgia and Coach Chaney had to offer and that really attracted me.”

Wims said Smart’s vision for Georgia also played a big role.

Although he’s heard pitches from other schools, there was something about Smart’s sincerity and passion that made him easy to believe.

“He’s got the program going in the right direction and he’s picking up where Coach (Mark) Richt left off and taking it to that next level,” Wims said. “I believed in the system and I believed in the vision that he (Smart) had. I’m a forward thinking person myself and I believed what they had in their plan. I liked everything.”

Now he’s just ready to do his part.

“I’m a winner at heart. Everybody wants individual accolades but in my heart I’m a winner and I wanted to go someplace where I could really fit in and I felt like Georgia has everything you need to contend,” he said. “The defense is great, the offense is great and with that run game you’ve got two All-American running backs on the same team. I just felt like I could come in and add to that at receiver.”
