Tim Kimbrough took to Twitter Thursday morning to confirm he is leaving Georgia and intends to transfer to A Division II school.

But that wasn't all the linebacker had to say.

Kimbrough also said he "didn't have a choice to stay at Georgia." While he did not elaborate as to the reasons why, he did allude to an issue with the current coaching staff.

Smart released this statement Thursday afternoon.

“Based on a mutual decision between Tim (Kimbrough) and I, he will no longer be a part of our football program. We wish him the best as he continues his education and playing career," Smart said.

But Kimbrough apparently doesn't agree.

"Coach told me he was going to kick me off the team or I had to transfer," Kimbrough told the Associated Press.

He said Smart said that after Kimbrough left practice on Tuesday, although the player did not give a reason why.

Kimbrough's father - Tim Kimbrough Sr. - confirmed Wednesday night to UGASports.com that his son was heading elsewhere.

After practice on Wednesday, head coach Kirby Smart confirmed Kimbrough was not with the team.

"Tim's got a little leave of absence right now," Smart said. "I can't really comment other than that."

Kimbrough played in 36 games his first three years, including seven starts last year with the Bulldogs, making 104 career tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss. He was Georgia's leading returning tackler with 67.

His absence leaves the Bulldogs somewhat thin at inside linebacker, where Natrez Patrick is working through what looks to be some sort of leg injury, while Reggie Carter and Roquan Smith are coming off injuries of their own while sophomore Juwan Taylor, senior Johnny O'Neal, senior Ryne Rankin and freshman Jaleel Laguins have either yet to play or played very little over the course of their careers.

During fall camp, Kimbrough had been running second team behind Carter and Patrick.

Kimbrough apparently was not happy about that.

"In the spring I earned my starting job," Kimbrough told the Associated Press.
