With the beginning of every season, the question for Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox is always the same: How will the newcomers fare?

When the Bulldogs opening their season Friday night at Clemson (7 p.m., FOXRSN), Georgia will debut a trio of talented newcomers in junior college transfer Pape Diatta, along with guards Jordan Harris and Tyree Crump.

So, what does Fox think?

“I want them to compete for time but I want them to contribute to winning. I think they have some really good moments in practice; they’ve had some stinkers; but they’re not the lone rangers,” Fox said. “We’ve had some veterans who have had a couple of stinkers that make me scratch my head, but I hope those guys will continue to grow and contribute. They’re talented kids.”

Of the three, Crump appears most ready to help the Bulldogs from an offensive perspective.

The former four-star from Bainbridge enjoyed a fine debut last week, scoring 14 points, including a 4-of-7 night from 3-point range.

“It was good to see some shots go in, but I’m just looking forward to this next game,” said Crump, who knows there are still areas to his game he needs to improve.

“Basically just on the defensive end, that’s the main thing,” he said. “The offense is going to come.”

Harris, meanwhile, hit all three of his field goal attempts, including one of Georgia’s 13 3-pointers in the team’s exhibition win, and played well in the team’s recent trip to Spain.

But while Fox believes the trio benefited from the additional work, he’s not ready to say the extra work makes the group any more seasoned as far as being ready for regular season play.

“I don’t know if I’d say that,” Fox said. “They had a couple of extra practices. The games there were just a chance for them to get their feet wet, but I don’t know if that gives them a big advantage.”

But contribute they will.

The 6-foot-7 Diatta didn’t score but five points in the exhibition win over Fort Valley, but his first shot resulted in a three-pointer. He displayed excellent quickness and has shown Fox the knack for getting the ball to his teammates to create plays.

“Pap is a versatile player,” Fox said. “One of the things we like about him is he’s a terrific passer, he’s a really good rebounder. So, I think the first thing we have to do with him is make sure he’s comfortable with playing and then we’ll be able to move him around a little bit more.”
