How Georgia's WR/TE room shapes up for the present, future

We continue our pre-camp preview with a look at the wide receivers and tight ends.

There’s a lot to be excited about. On paper, this appears to be Georgia’s deepest collection of wide receivers during Kirby Smart’s tenure in Athens. Underline the fact that tight end Brock Bowers is back for another year, and it’s easy to see why expectations are so high for this year’s offense, despite the Bulldogs breaking in a new starting quarterback.

Let’s take a look.

OUTLOOK FOR 2023

We’ll start with the wide receivers.

You know what they say about “on paper.” Still, this year’s additions of transfers RaRa Thomas and Dominic Lovett offer what could give the Bulldogs their deepest corps of receivers in Smart’s eight years as head coach. More on them momentarily.

When we start talking about Georgia’s wide receivers, we need to begin with Ladd McConkey. He’s earned that standing.

McConkey’s story takes him from a player with only one FBS offer (Georgia) to a preseason All-SEC selection. The junior becomes one of the most compelling narratives from this Georgia team after leading all Bulldog wide receivers in catches with 58 catches for 762 yards and seven touchdowns.

Oh yeah, Georgia also uses the speedy wideout on jet sweeps with McConkey rushing last year for 134 yards and two scores.

Arian Smith, meanwhile, has been teasing Bulldog fans for two years with his blazing speed. If he can stay healthy, sights such as we saw during last year’s playoff semifinal over Ohio State could become the relative norm.

Add in the dependable Dillon Bell and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, the returning Jackson Meeks, C.J. Smith and Cole Speer, along with a talented trio of freshmen in Anthony Evans III, Zeed Haynes and Tyler Williams, and it's apparent the Bulldogs’ receiving corps would have been in great shape even if Thomas and Lovett hadn't been brough on board.

Their addition is the whipped cream on top of the pie.

Thomas, I’m told, has had a great summer and has really started to form a bond with quarterback Carson Beck. Adding in the explosive Lovett, who averaged over 15 yards per catch (56 catches for 846 yards), there should be no shortage of explosive plays from Georgia’s passing game come fall.

We’ve gone this far and not even mentioned Brock Bowers, who has redefined the tight end position at Georgia.

Getting the football to Bowers in as many ways possible is the charge for offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, and there’s no reason to think he won’t. Bowers is a special talent. Enjoy him, folks.

Oscar Delp, along with freshmen Lawson Luckie and Pearce Spurlin, will provide quality depth and receive plenty of playing time early on.

OUTLOOK BEYOND 2023

We’ll start with who might not be here.

Bowers is all but a guarantee to leave early for the NFL, with McConkey and possibly Lovett also deciding to leave early for the NFL with a strong season.

Of course, Rosemy-Jacksaint is a senior.

The Bulldogs do have commitments from a pair of wide receivers in NiTareon Tuggle and Ny Carr but are on the lookout for more.

At the tight, Georgia has commitments from four stars Jason Reddell and Collin Heinrich, who will join Delp, Spurlin, and Luckie.
