Georgia offers dual-sport athlete

Georgia continues to put out offers under the new coaching staff. One of those offers went out Sunday night to Tyrell Shavers (Lewisville, Tx./Lewisville), a 6-foot-6, 200-pound wide receiver.

“I was talking to Coach [Glenn] Schumann on Twitter and he told me to call him,” Shavers said. “When I called him, he told me I had an offer. It came out of nowhere.”

Schumann’s main message for the three-star prospect was to highlight the offense the Bulldogs plan to run under offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

“He talked to me about my potential to play in the NFL and how their offense is basically how it is in the NFL,” Shavers said. “He said a lot of other schools run the spread offense, which is good, but the NFL offense is better for me.”

A Texas native, Shavers doesn’t know a lot about Georgia’s program, but there are a few aspects that stand out.

“I know they win a lot,” Shavers said. “I like the SEC a lot. That’s about all I know. I have watched them in the past and I know they had A.J. Green. I didn’t watch him at Georgia, but I’ve watched him in the NFL.”

Miami and Texas A&M also offered Shavers on Sunday. Oklahoma has also shown heavy interest lately as well. Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Iowa, Iowa State, Colorado, Colorado State, Tulane, North Texas and SMU have already offered.

For Shavers, his recruiting decision won’t strictly be a football decision. He’s a star on the baseball diamond as a pitcher and outfielder with offers from Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. He said Georgia will also talk to him about baseball later.

As a highly regarded baseball player, the option is always there for him to skip college and play professional baseball.

“It is an option,” Shavers said. “It just depends on where I fall in the draft.”

Shavers doesn’t plan on waiting too much longer before making a decision. He plans to be very active this summer taking visits in hopes of reaching a decision.

“My plan right now is to commit right before the football season starts,” Shavers said. “I’m going to play both. If the pros become an option, I’ll look at that later. All the schools are even right now.”
