Fox would like to see UGA-Tech hit Philips every once in a while

Georgia travels to Georgia Tech Tuesday night as part of their alternating on-campus series between Athens and Atlanta.

But if Bulldog head coach Mark Fox had his way, another nearby venue would be added to the mix.

“I think we should play this game in Philips Arena. That’s what I think,” Fox said Saturday. “Maybe not every year, but every couple of years, especially when you have to play at this time of year.”

Part of Fox’s push for Atlanta is the fact – at this time of year – students at both schools are home for the Christmas Holidays, and having the game at a neutral site like Philips would perhaps encourage more people to attend it.

“I think it would be great for the people in the city of Atlanta, and great for everybody,” Fox said. “But I haven’t been able to get that done yet.”

According to Fox, there have been some conversations before between the two schools about the possibility.

Georgia and Georgia Tech played in the old Omni between 1981-1994 before being moved back to the two campus sites.

Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told the Atlanta Constitution that he’s spoken briefly to Fox about the possibility.

“I think it would be good every once in a while for the game, but I’m not the only one who has an opinion on it,” Fox said. “People above me here – I don’t know their opinion so I’m not saying they don’t agree with me – but there’s people on the other side. So we’ve got to get everybody to buy into it.”
