Fall Camp Day 4 Practice Report:

Davin Bellamy is keenly aware of the tradition of great players to have played OLB for Georgia. (Radi Nabulsi)

The list of great players who have played outside linebacker for Georgia reads like a Who’s Who.

That’s a fact junior Davin Bellamy is keenly aware of.

With Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd now earning their living in the NFL, it’s now up to players like Bellamy and fellow junior Lorenzo Carter to keep the tradition going.

“I broke it down with our guys and told them we’ve got to make sure we bring it every day in practice because this position is a very sacred position at Georgia and we have to kind of follow up behind it,” Bellamy said after practice on Thursday. “But it’s not really any pressure. We’ve just got to play football, but we know the guys who played there before were great, even before Jordan (Jenkins) and Flo (Leonard Floyd). It’s always there in the back of your mind.”

Potentially, the Bulldogs should not see much – if any - of a drop-off.

Carter is coming off a solid spring, while Bellamy enjoyed a strong sophomore campaign spelling Jenkins and Floyd, collecting 33 tackles including three sacks.

The former Chamblee standout received a scare during practice for the TaxSlayer Bowl against Penn State when he tweaked his left knee.

“There’s still some little dings during practice, but for the most part it’s fine now,” Bellamy said. “I think we’re doing pretty good. We know that we’re going to be counted on heavily a lot this year so we’re trying to take advantage of all our reps. It’s hot out there, so we’re really getting conditioned for taking that bigger role. I think we’re both handling it very well.”

But Bellamy and Carter won’t be the only outside linebackers pulling duty for the Bulldogs.

Chuks Amaechi is back for his senior year after missing all of the spring, while sophomore D’Andre Walker has shown a knack for getting to the ball with Keon Brown and freshman Chauncey Manac also expected to play important roles.

“Chuks is a vet. We know what Chuks brings and he’s going to help us a lot,” Bellamy said. “D’Andre plays like his head is cut off. He runs around all over the field. I think we’ll have a good group this year.”

It’s mo-ZHAY, not Mauger

After years of mispronunciation, senior safety Quincy Mauger is setting the record straight – the correct way to say his last name is “mo-Zhay.”

While this might not be a big deal to some, it was to Mauger who wanted to honor his Haitian heritage. Both his parents and were born in Haiti before moving to South Florida when they were very young.

"Family and close friends, they always knew," he said. "My mom wanted me to get it right. I've heard it as Munger, Maugher, Mooger ... I've heard it all. In English, it's 'maw-gurh,' but in French, in creole, it's 'mo-ZHAY.'"

Mauger isn’t the only Bulldog with Haitian heritage. Running back Sony Michel is as well.

“Me and Sony being Haitian, we can relate to a lot of things like going to church, the food. The culture is very different.”

Mauger was jokingly asked if the change will somehow help his game.

“It won’t,” he said laughing. “But I will say this, the offense, defense and special teams has really been doing a great job showing great tempo and great tenacity. We’ve been going at it every day and not letting up.”

This and that

Georgia worked out for two hours is helmets and shoulder pads. The team will put on the full pads for the first time on Friday, and again for Saturday’s open practice at Sanford Stadium set to begin at 2:30 p.m. … Running back Shaquery Wilson missed his third straight day of practice Thursday while dealing with a bone bruise.
