Details released of Holyfield's arrest

Georgia Bulldog sophomore running back Elijah Holyfield was booked into the Athens Clarke County jail at 3:33 a.m. ET on two misdemeanor marijuana charges early Monday morning.

He was released on bond approximately 30 minutes later.

The first charge was for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana; the second was for possession of drug-related objects.

According to a copy of the police report obtained Monday afternoon by UGASports.com, UGA officers were dispatched at 11:31 p.m. Sunday night to Vandiver Hall in reference to the smell of marijuana coming from room 2014.

After knocking on the door, police made contact with Holyfield. According to the report, the running back's eyes appeared to be bloodshot and when the door opened, the smell of marijuana became even stronger.

Holyfield was asked if he had been smoking. He stated he had not and did not know what police were talking about, noting that he had been watching TV while his roommates slept.

The sophomore was asked by police if they could enter his room. Holyfield declined, and at that point was advised, because the smell of marijuana was detected, a search warrant would be obtained.

At that time, police had Holyfield, along with roommates Mecole Hardman and Deangelo Gibbs, to step out while a search warrant was being issued.

Neither Hardman nor Gibbs were ultimately charged.

While no contraband was found in the rooms of Hardman and Gibbs, officers did discover a glass pipe located inside a white iPhone box that contained marijuana residue. While searching a bottom drawer in Holyfield's desk, officers also found a blue plastic box that contained what was suspected to be a loose bud of marijuana. A suspected burned bud was also found.

Officers also found a cigarillo bag outside the window of Holyfield's apartment, containing seven buds of unburned marijuana. All the material later tested positive for marijuana at which time Holyfield was placed under arrest.

He was later released on bonds totaling $4,050.00.

Bulldog head coach Kirby Smart is aware of the incident, the second marijuana-related arrest for Georgia in 2017. Last March, wide receiver Riley Ridley was arrested for misdemeanor possession of less than an ounce.

According to the University of Georgia student athlete handbook, the first drug related arrest for a student athlete carries a mandatory suspension of 10% of the season: "9. The student-athlete will be suspended from competition during the athletic season for no less than 10% of the total sport season."
