Georgia’s starting rotation is set.

Wednesday, Bulldog baseball coach Scott Stricklin announced that sophomore left-hander Kevin Smith will get the call for Friday’s season-opener against the College of Charleston. He’ll be followed on Saturday by freshman Tony Locey with junior college transfer Chase Adkins going in Sunday’s series finale.

“Experience, and he’s had a really good three or four weeks,” Stricklin said of Smith. “He’s got some experience, and having that left-handed guy on the mound for a Friday night is something we wanted to do.”

At 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, Smith will remind Bulldog fans of former hurler Alex Wood, currently with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last year, the Dunwoody native made 13 appearances, including seven starts, going 5-1 with a 3.91 ERA.

Stricklin said that Locey has been penciled into the Saturday start for a couple of weeks, although the decision to go with Smith over Adkins for Friday was extremely close.

“It was really a flip of the coin. Chase wanted to be the Friday guy, which was a good thing. We sat Chase down last week and he reacted the way I hoped he’d react. He was disappointed and a little ticked off, and I told him I want that chip on your shoulder to pitch on Sunday,” Stricklin said. “I said, I know you’ll handle it the right way, he did. I told him, I’m glad he didn’t give me a high five--I’m glad you’re not excited to be the Sunday guy--because you wanted to be the Friday guy.”

Adkins is coming off a 8-2 record last year at Chattahoochee Valley Community College where he posted a conference-best 1.81 ERA with five complete games, including three shutouts.

NOTE: Stricklin also said that starting outfielder Keegan McGovern has a twinge in his lower back and may be held out this weekend for precautionary measures. If McGovern can’t play, junior college transfer Will Campbell will move from DH to the outfield to play in his spot.
