Dawgs get 30th commit

Georgia picked up its 30th commitment late Saturday night when safety The Georgia football program is on quite a roll after defeating Georgia Tech 42-0 on Saturday and now having a chance to play Alabama for the SEC championship and a spot in the BCS National Championship.

UGA's recruiting, however, might be on an even bigger roll as the Bulldogs picked up their 30th commitment Saturday night from Gulf Coast Community College defensive back Kennar Johnson.

"Yes sir," said Johnson via text message when asked if he had committed to Georgia. "I committed.

Johnson, who chose UGA over South Florida and Ole Miss, says that he was spending time with the coaches when the time just felt right to make the decision.

"I went out to with the coaches and we had a good time. Then me and my parents went to Coach (Mark) Richt's house," said Johnson. "Me and Coach Richt spent some time together and enjoyed each other's company. Then after that, I knew it was time to commit. I had that feeling where I knew I was where I wanted to be."

While Johnson is undoubtedly happy to have the recruiting process out of the way, Richt was much happier that the Bulldogs were able to land the JUCO playmaker.

"He (Richt) was really happy. They were jumping for joy and stuff," said Johnson. "He hugged me a couple of times and told me that they were glad to have me."

The Florida native was in Athens for his official visit when he decided to commit, and his overall view of the school and town also played a big role in his decision.

"I'm from Miami so seeing a town like Athens where they have the downtown scene and stuff like that, it just makes me more comfortable," said Johnson. "It is close enough to home but not too close for me, and they obviously have a very successful program. I was just ready to commit and do what those guys like (Bacarri) Rambo and (Alec) Ogletree do."

Seeing has how Georgia loses their top two safeties to graduation in Shawn Williams and Rambo, Johnson also sees and excellent opportunity to come in and play early.

He definitely noticed the play of Rambo, who had two force fumbles and an interception on Saturday, and believes he cane come in and have a similar impact in the near future.

"I mean, I don't think I got to see what the defensive backs can do because of the offense they played against, but he (Rambo) had a great game," said Johnson. "In me, I think UGA is getting a great guy who can come in and play. I can be a ball hawk or I can come down and make the hit. I think I'm kind of a combination of Rambo and Ogletree."

Johnson also says that the Georgia staff believes he is versatile enough to be given a chance to play any position in the secondary.

"They gave me the option of playing corner or safety," said Johnson. "I can play both, but I prefer safety."

Now that the stress of making a decision is out of the way, Johnson, who will graduate from GCCC in December and enroll in January, says he will find it tough to deal with his excitement level for the next few weeks until he can join the team.

"Man, I just can't wait to get there and get started," he said. "Getting there is one thing but to come in and be there before everyone else gets started is big and I just want to go work hard and find my place."
