THE SITUATION
In the aftermath of a one-week, eight-school road trip, Jalen Kimber's mind is made up. The three-star cornerback and Five-Star Challenge invitee committed to Georgia over Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas and Oklahoma.
Kimber's first trip to Athens was critical toward his decision. He's a Chicago native living in North Texas and intended to go out-of-state to play college football. He found a home at Georgia, where he plans to enroll early and make an early impact in the SEC.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
"From start to finish, it was a great experience. I'm glad I was able to get out and see other campuses besides Texas. I hadn't seen anything besides Texas and Oklahoma, so my first time to be able to get out and experience different colleges and different starts, it was really good timing.
"When we came back, my dad and I talked about which was the best place for me. Now, I don't need any more visits. We compared and contrasted, and after taking everything in, Georgia is where I felt the most comfortable at over all these visits. It's where I liked the best.
"Being there and experiencing it for the first time was really cool. Even before I got the offer, I was thinking about Georgia. I remember saying, 'Dang, I like Georgia.' When I went down there and was able to talk to Coach (Kirby) Smart and Coach (Charleton) Waren, I was able to see how Coach Waren talked during the coaching clinic ... it was everything. I liked it, I liked the campus and the people there. I love Georgia.
"They had a plan for me. They told me how I'd be able to kick off the 2020 class for Georgia and be able to create one of the best recruiting classes in the nation.
"Getting out of Texas was not a big deal for me. Getting out was something I wanted to do. I like Georgia. I don't know exactly what it is, but I felt like I could be there. It felt good to be around the people and around the coaches.
"The coaches like my length. They like my speed and my versatility. They want me in the slot and at corner. They like my football IQ. They said my football smarts can take me a long way and that's what I like.
"My dad is certified in strength and conditioning. He used to be a trainer and Georgia has two master trainers. They were talking for the longest and he loved that. Getting to watch their practice was the highlight of the trip. Talking to Coach Smart for 15 or 20 minutes, he told me all the things he liked about me, telling me about their program and the environment over there."
RIVALS REACTION
At 6-foot and 170 pounds, Kimber is a speedy defensive back capable of playing on the boundary or in the slot. He has 35-inch arms and nearly 76-inch wingspan, which paired with his elite speed and coverage skills makes for an elite defensive back.
Kimber plays inside and outside for Mansfield Timberview (Texas) High School. He thrives in press-man coverage where he can jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. He moves very well laterally and naturally tracks the football and high-points the football. He isn't shy about delivering big hits to receivers after the catch either.
Kimber was the Defensive Back MVP of RCS Dallas and punched his ticket to the Rivals Five-Star Challenge. Currently a 5.7 three-star cornerback, Kimber's stock is on the rise heading into the next Rivals rankings update.
Kimber's week-long visit through the Southeast allowed Georgia to move to pole position with the Texas cornerback. He had steadily visited Texas and Oklahoma, but the trip to Athens stood out. It's a major get for coach Kirby Smart as the Dawgs continue to recruit well nationally, particularly in the secondary. Expect Kimber to shut his recruitment down moving forward. He's set to enroll early at Georgia and indicated he will only be visiting there after committing.
