Williams earns UGA offer

Rutland wide receiver Shakenneth Williams isn't really the type of guy that worries.

When the recruiting process started for the 6-foot-2, 195-pound pass catcher, he didn't have big time offers. But he knew he would have a chance to earn them down the road.

He took that mentality to Georgia on Saturday, and did precisely what he wanted to do.

"My mindset was to go out there, work hard, and, like they were saying out there, just finish," Williams said. "I wanted to finish all the drills and compete with everybody. All I did was compete with every body and I feel like I did a great job and Georgia offered me."

Based on Williams' account of his conversation with the Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt, his work at camp was what made the Georgia staff extend him the opportunity to play his college ball Between the Hedges.

"Ah man. The offer was great," he said. "It was me and Coach Richt meeting in his office when he offered me, and he said that he liked everything that he saw from me during the day. He just told me to keep fighting and keep having the mentality to go out and work hard and keep learning to get prepared for the next level."

Sometimes when a prospect visits a campus without having an offer, the coaching staff places less of an emphasis impressing and spending time with that player.

Williams says that he was treated well as soon as he reached campus, and that gives him a good feeling about the UGA program.

"When I got there (Georgia), I felt like it was a family I could be around," he said. "I felt like they treated me like family. They took me around and took their time with me. They let me learn from them. It was just an all around great feeling there with the staff and everybody that was there. It made you feel welcome."

So where do the Bulldogs stand after Williams' Saturday visit and offer?

"Actually, this Georgia offer is very high right now," Williams said. "I would say it is definitely in the top three for me. I'm not just saying that because I just went there today and got offered, but I just know I've been wanting this offer for a long time. Now that I have it, I'm just going to take it in stride, see what comes, and see how they recruit me. Other than that, it is just very high and I think UGA is in a good position with Vanderbilt right now."

Georgia has made a strong move for the big, physical receiver, but another SEC East team is also firmly in the mix for his services.

"Me and the Vandy coaches talk like every day," he said. "We don't talk on the phone but we message each other every day online. I have a great relationship with all of the coaches there. I think that is what makes me speak so highly of Vanderbilt. I went up there and it was my first offer. I take pride in that and everything has gone well up there."

At this point in his recruitment, Williams says he has no leader and no timeline for a decision, but he does have plans to visit more campuses and earn more offers.

"I'm going to South Carolina on June 21 and then I'm going to visit Ole Miss and Mississippi State soon so those are the visits I have set up so far," Williams said. "I'll probably hit UCF in the middle of July."
