Georgia has proven it is a championship program with back-to-back national crowns. Can it be a three-peat? We are taking a way-too-early, hazardous look at potential starters for the 2023 team. Yes, we know the confetti has barely settled on the ground, but kickoff against UT-Martin is only 34 Saturdays away.
Some of the players listed below will leave. Whether going pro or transferring out, this list will be different in many ways by the summer. Other new players will arrive. New information will emerge about all the players listed below. Consider this a best guess that will evolve and change with time.
Quarterback
Returnees: Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff, Gunner Stockton
Newcomers: None
Dayne’s analysis: At this juncture, Carson Beck must be odds-on-favorite to be the starter. Spring competition will be such where all three returning quarterbacks can win the job. In terms of physical skill set, I think Vandagriff can help Georgia maximize offense most. It all comes down to which QB has command of the offense and buy-in from teammates. If any of these transfer out, Georgia will need to hit the portal for QB depth.
Best guess at starter: Carson Beck, but with competition going well into fall.
Running Back
Returnees: Kendall Milton, Daijun Edwards, Branson Robinson, Andrew Paul
Newcomers: Roderick Robinson
Dayne’s analysis: This room has a chance to be special. Milton’s return paired with Robinson gives Georgia a devastating pair of bruising backs. How the other three plug in with speed runs and pass catching will determine the ceiling for this position group.
Best guess at starter: Kendall Milton off the bus, with plenty of playing time for Edwards, Robinson, and Paul.
Wide Receiver
Returnees: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, AD Mitchell, Ladd McConkey, Arian Smith, Dillon Bell, Jackson Meeks, DeNylon Morrissette, Mehki Mews, Cole Speer, C.J. Smith
Newcomers: Dominic Lovett, Rara Thomas, Anthony Evans III, Tyler Williams, Yazeed Haynes
Dayne’s analysis: Georgia’s action in the portal with Lovett and Thomas is an indicator that more movement is probable in this room. Does Dom Blaylock return for a final season? Will others transfer away? Georgia has retooled at wide receiver to insulate for roster management season.
Best guess at starters: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Ladd McConkey, AD Mitchell. Next up would be Lovett, Bell, and Arian Smith.
Tight End
Returnees: Brock Bowers, Oscar Delp, Ryland Goede,
Newcomers: Lawson Luckie, Pearce Spurlin
Dayne’s analysis: Losing Darnell Washington changes Georgia’s offense. Returning Brock Bowers makes it less jarring. Brett Seither has entered the transfer portal. Goede could entertain transfer portal chatter too. Luckie and Spurlin will play early and often at Georgia.
Best guess at starter: Bowers, duh. Then Delp.
Tackle
Returnees: Amarius Mims, Earnest Greene, Austin Blaske, Chad Lindberg, Jacob Hood, Aliou Bah
Newcomers: Monroe Freeling, Kelton Smith, Joshua Miller, Bo Hughley, Jamal Meriweather
Dayne’s analysis: If there is a spot for concern when it comes to depth, this is it.
Best guess at starter: Earnest Greene at left tackle and Amarius Mims at right tackle. The two-deep at both is a quandary until spring ball. Warren McClendon could return, but I doubt it.
Guard
Returnees: Xavier Truss, Devin Willock, Tate Ratledge, Micah Morris, Jared Wilson, Dylan Fairchild, Griffin Scroggs
Newcomers:
Dayne’s analysis: The depth here will be critical for a new left tackle and a potential fresh center. You can be sure some of these guys will draw interest from teams hunting in the portal.
Best guess at starter: Devin Willock at left guard. Tate Ratledge at right guard, with Micah Morris working his way into playing time.
Center
Returnees: Sedrick Van Pran, Austin Blaske, Drew Bobo
Newcomers:
Dayne’s analysis: Warren Ericson has another year of eligibility, but I’ve heard chatter of him wanting to hang up the helmet and perhaps help the team as a G.A. to kickstart a possible coaching career.
Best guess at starter: It is Van Pran if he returns.
