If you don't already know about East Mississippi Community College (Scooba, Miss.) offensive lineman Avery Gennesy, you might want to do your homework.
At 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, Gennesy already possesses the combination of size, strength, and athleticism that many coaches dream about in an offensive tackle, but that wasn't always the case.
Coming out of high school, he didn't have a BCS offer.
"I had offers from Southern Miss, Arkansas State, UAB, Memphis, and some other schools," Gennesy said in a telephone interview with UGASports Tuesday morning. "I wanted to go to Arkansas State, but the Coach (Hugh) Freeze left, so I decided not to go there. Then I just decided I want to go to JUCO. I came on a visit, and I liked it."
After a strong year at East Mississippi, Gennesy now holds double digit BCS offers, but don't expect him to tell you which ones stand out.
According to the JUCO standout, all of the offers are special at this time.
"All the offers are big to me," he said when asked if any offers were standing out. "That is the way I look at it. They all stand out."
One of the latest schools to extend an offer to the four-star JUCO is the Georgia Bulldogs, and UGA offensive line coach Will Friend delivered the news to Gennesy last week.
"I got the UGA offer last Thursday," he said. "I was about to go to class, and coach called me over and told me that Georgia wanted to talk to me. I called Coach Friend, and he told me they that they like my film and like the way I play, so they offered me right then."
While Gennesy claims no leaders at this time, he does say that the Georgia offer is one that has caught his eye.
"It means a lot. I'm excited about the offer from Georgia," Gennesy said. "I'm very blessed to have it. It is a great program and an SEC school, so it is something I like. I know they play hard and build strong relationships there. They do a good job of building relationships at Georgia. It isn't just about football up there. They have great players and great people. That is what I mostly know about them."
Most prospects, both JUCO and prep, have a summer full of visits and camps, but not Gennesy.
He plans wait until the fall before he starts seeing campuses.
"I plan on making my visits in the fall because most of our games are on Thursday," he said. "I'm going to check around and use the Internet to research the schools and set up my visits in the fall. I want to take my official visits then."
Gennesy also says that he is on pace to be at the school of his choice in January of 2014.
"I will graduate in December," he said. "That is the plan right now and that is what I am on track to do right now."
