" I was made aware kind of right as we were right there going out for practice about their situation. You know, obviously really disappointed. I’ve obviously done a poor job with this group of connecting and making sure they listen and understand things," head coach Kirby Smart said after Tuesday's seventh day of spring practice.

"Obviously, we have policies and rules in place. These guys violated these policies and roles. They’ll serve the punishment that they deserve for it. I hate the decisions they’ve made, and they’ve got to learn as young men that you can’t break the rules, you can’t break the law. Our guys have not done a good job of that, and that all falls on me. We’re going to do a great job of moving forward and trying to get these guys in the right place and making good decisions.

“I will say this: We’ve got 90 percent of our team that we have the least number of misses, the least number of tardies, that are doing things right, and I’m very disappointed in the 10 percent that have not.”

Cox and Beal became the sixth players arrested this offseason.

Back on March 24, wide receiver Tyler Simmons and Tyrique Stevenson were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct as the result of a fight that at a downtown Athens bar.

On March 20, backup linebacker Jaden Hunter was arrested for illegally stopping, standing or parking his car and driving with a suspended license. That followed a Feb. 28 arrest of backup safety Latavious Brini on Feb. 28 after he allegedly slapped a man at another downtown Athens Bar.

Cox played in 13 games last year for the Bulldogs, starting one, finishing with 29 tackles, including a sack. He’s been running with the first team at outside linebacker.

Beal, meanwhile, played in 11 of 14 games, making 15 tackles, but missed the SEC Championship against Alabama while dealing with a concussion.

Smart was asked what more he could do to keep such incidents from happening in the future.

“I think the biggest thing is, you say, all right, what’s your selection process, what’s your criteria when you go to select players," Smart said. "You want to go get guys that have high character, that make good decisions, You also want to go get guys that lead and want to be part of this organization."

That wasn't all Smart had to say on the subject.

"We tell guys all the time that this is a privilege. It is a privilege to be a part of University of Georgia football. I saw Robert Edwards and Terrance Edwards out here today, and to see both those guys, they can speak ad nauseum about what a privilege it is to be a part of something bigger than yourself. I don’t know that some of our guys realize that," Smart said. "I’ll be honest with you, I think sometimes you don’t realize it until the privilege is lost. Sometimes it takes a catastrophic event to change your course. And when I’m talking a catastrophic event that is losing your privilege of being here. That’s unfortunate. But we’re going to follow the rules and policies on these guys and move forward.”

UGASports requested the police report from the University of Georgia police department. According the the report, the residence hall director for Rooker Hall, Casey Lewis, accompanied a maintenance worker to room 420A to unclog a toilet. That room belongs to Cox and Beal. Lewis saw what looked to be marijuana on a dresser. Lewis called the police. The responding officers sought a search warrant, were granted one, and proceeded to search room 420A. Marijuana was found and Cox and Beal were arrested.
