Thad Matta was back in Athens Tuesday and he didn’t come alone.

Three independent sources confirmed to UGASports that Matta, along with his wife Barbara, were back in the Classic City, less than 24 hours after the former Ohio State coach was in town on Monday to talk with athletic director Greg McGarity and President Jere Morehead.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution was the first to report Matta’s Tuesday return, along with that of his wife.

Tuesday’s trip back would seem to indicate that Matta is indeed serious about the job with Georgia, which fired Mark Fox on Saturday.

As reported Monday by UGASports, it’s believed Georgia officials are impressed with Matta on a couple of fronts.

No. 1, the 50-year-old is the winningest coach in the history of Ohio State, leading the Buckeyes to a pair of trips to the Final Four while boasting a combined record of 439-151, a mark that includes stops at Butler, Xavier, as well as his stint in Columbus.

No. 2, it’s believed Georgia officials are impressed that his most recent success occurred at Ohio State, which like UGA, is known more for its football program.

Of course, Matta’s health is a question.

Matta’s back issues have been well-chronicled, and Georgia officials will want to make sure he is up to the task.

Another issue is his mitigation with Ohio State, which is documented here. Per a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the mitigation should not be an issue.
