The running back tandem of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel will be missed in Athens. Heck, college football fans in general will miss them. Their accomplishments warrant some perspective. Later this week I will delve into Chubb and today I will delve deep statistically into Sony Michel.
• Michel came to Georgia from Plantation, Florida, and was ranked No. 13 on the Rivals 100 in 2014. The future superstar had six carries for 33 yards in his first career collegiate game. That came against Clemson on August 30, 2014. He first three touches were from receptions, but he got his first carry in the second quarter. It went for two yards… he did a lot better after that as you can see by his career stats…
• One of my favorite stats from above is that he only had 11 career starts. Not many players have just 11 starts and finish in the top five on their team’s all-time rushing yards list. As we have consistently documented all season, Michel started the season at the tenth spot and ended up at number three. Here are the top five all-time leading Georgia Bulldogs in terms of career rushing yards.
• In terms of touchdown rushes, Michel had 16 during his senior season which is tied for fifth most in a season by a Bulldog. Michel had 17 in his first three years combined. The 16 scores were also one more than his roommate Chubb. However, the 33 touchdown rushes in his career is also tied for fifth all-time. Check out this list…
• Here a breakdown of Michel throughout his career in terms of quarter-by-quarter rushing yards.
• Here is a breakdown on how Michel fared against the regular teams Georgia plays each year.
• Here are Michel's bowl stats including the CFP Championship.
• Michel's career-high in terms of the most rushing yards in a game was 181 at the Rose Bowl. Here are his top five games in that statistic...
• He ended up with 11 career 100-yard games and the Bulldogs were 9-2 in those contests.
• He is one of four Bulldogs all-time that has more than one 1,000-yard rush season (Herschel Walker, Nick Chubb and Knowshon Moreno).
• The most attempts Michel ever had in a game was 26, and he did that against Missouri in 2015 and later that season against Auburn.
• The longest rush of his career was 75 yards. He did that twice: once against Troy in 2014 (did not score) and once against Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl (touchdown). He also had a 74-yard touchdown run against Florida earlier this season as well.
• His career 6.2 yards per attempt is fifth highest all-time by a Bulldog and his 7.9 this past season was the second highest for a season (Chubb had 8.1 during his sophomore season).
• Michel was also a very good receiver for the Dawgs. He ended up with 64 career receptions for 621 yards and six scores through the air.
• Here are his six touchdown receptions in detail...
• The most receptions he had in a game were four. Those grabs came against Missouri in 2015 and Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl this season.
• The most receiving yards he had in a game was 79 and that happened against Louisiana Monroe in 2015. That game he also had his longest reception. That pass went for 48 yards and was thrown by Greyson Lambert. The longest touchdown reception he had went for 33 yards. He had one against South Carolina in 2014 and another in the 2016 Liberty Bowl against TCU.
• He also had four career kickoff returns. They went for 71 yards with a long of 20.
Sony Michel was a Damn Good Dawg.
