Kirby Smart Camp: A Look Ahead

No longer 'Dawg Night', Kirby Smart has converted the summer's major recruiting event into a three day event. Today, we check on the key storylines, players, and more to watch for from the loaded weekend in Athens.

When

Sign in for the camp runs from 12 PM until 2 PM on Friday.

The camp concludes Sunday at 11:30 AM.

KEY PROSPECTS

Bishop is down to three options, with Georgia, Florida, and Auburn in the mix. The Tigers are thought to be the favorite for the time being, but the Bulldogs are still pushing. That being the case, this weekend will be a crucial final visit for Kirby Smart's staff before a July 25 announcement. Where he works out, be it wide receiver, defensive back, or quarterback, and how active the staff is in recruiting him will be noteworthy at the camp.

It's no secret that Holloman is a fan of the Bulldogs and their coaching staff, which he covered here, but what is unknown is when he plans to make an announcement on his commitment. Tennessee and Auburn are still key players and will be hoping to host him again, but expect for Georgia coaches to push for the end of his process this weekend. With a strong visit, they may well find themselves poised for such.

There may be no player committed elsewhere that Georgia covets as highly as Solomon. He was atop their defensive line board when he committed to the Wolverines a month ago, and it's likely he still holds that position for the Bulldogs. Solomon is the state's best defensive tackle in the class of 2017, and, as such, the staff is not going to concede losing him to the Big Ten just yet.

Georgia has hosted the likes of five-star tackles Isaiah Wilson and Calvin Ashley this summer, but this will be their first shot at Wills since he named them in his top list of schools. While his home team, the Kentucky Wildcats, are a popular pick to land his services, many linemen have left Georgia with a favorable view thanks to Sam Pittman. If he could work his magic on Wills, it would certainly be impressive.

A running list of participants can be found here.

NOTABLE ABSENCES

Grayson is playing in a 7-on-7 tournament this weekend, so there's no huge cause for alarm with Gibbs missing out, but it would have been helpful to get him back to campus, especially so soon after the news of his cousin, J.R. Reed, joining the Bulldogs came down. Georgia will get other chances to host, but this would have been a boost to their already strong efforts.

After landing Andrew Thomas at the Opening, Georgia will likely take only one more lineman in the class, and it's going to have to be the right fit. JUCO options are being considered, as are the aforementioned five-star tackles they have checked on. Gray has not been on the radar for some time, and his absence this weekend will only serve to deepen the divide.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Coach Blount in action

Among the commits taking part, Pace Academy's Trey Blount will look to have a somewhat specialized role. Sure, he'll likely split out and take a few reps, but he's also been invited to assist in the coaching of wide receivers during the camp. That may seem unconventional, but there are few better technicians at the position than the four-star standout, so his assistance makes a great deal of sense.

Will Jake Fromm continue his hot streak?

Few players had a better showing at The Opening than Fromm, and he'll look to build on that with the season around the corner. While some players may opt to hang out and take in the sights, look for Fromm, ever the competitor, to lace it up and throw a few balls. It's much easier to convince the playmakers Georgia hopes to bring in of how bright the future is with someone of Fromm's caliber dropping bombs across the field.

Swaying Solomon

We touched on Solomon above, but this is one worth reinforcing. Georgia should get a solid gauge this weekend on how their chances with the four-star defensive tackle look going forward, and that will shape the defensive line recruiting heading into the fall. Was the decision to commit to Michigan a spur of the moment call, or is the lure of Ann Arbor too much for Solomon to turn down? Both Solomon and Georgia should have a further degree of clarity on that after this visit.

Will the defensive recruiting get a boost?

With both Malik Herring and KJ Britt planning to be on campus and considered to be favoring Georgia as of now, this weekend's camp could go quite a ways in shaping the defensive outlook for the Bulldogs going forward. Britt is slated for an early August decision, while Herring's commitment has long felt as if it could come at any time. How this weekend goes could have large implication on if either ends up in Athens in the long run.
