Pinson (Ala.) High School DB TJ Metcalf felt the love from Miami Hurricane coaches over the last several weeks.

So he made the trip down to UM last weekend with his father and younger brother and sister. They watched the Spring Game and afterward drove to campus to meet with coaches and tour the facilities and campus.

“It went really well,” said Metcalf, whose cousins are DK Metcalf and Terrence Metcalf. “I got to see how the coaches coach, how the atmosphere was with the fans. Down in Miami the fans are electric. It was real fun. I got to see how I would look in their schemes, I feel I can come in and make an impact early. The coaches were letting me know that if I come down there I can do great.”

This was Metcalf’s first visit to Miami, and he says talking with coach Mario Cristobal on campus after the Spring Game that “He told me that they would definitely want me and need me there. He knows about my area, Alabama, because he coached at Alabama. We were just talking, casual conversation, talked some football and the players he coached and who he played with and who he coached with. It went really well.”

Metcalf says he’s in constant contact with Cristobal and Demarcus Van Dyke.

“The coaches have been real good to me and my family,” Metcalf said. “I feel that might be a place where I can go. Right now I’m narrowing down these schools, they’ll be a top school. They’ll definitely be in the race for it.”

Metcalf says he will narrow things down “after the spring, during the summer,” and that he hopes to have a final decision in place before his season.

“I’ll set up June official visits first,” he said. “I’ know I’ll definitely take an official visit to Miami.”

CaneSport’s take

The Canes are high up here, and Metcalf is also visiting Michigan and Michigan State this weekend. He says among the other schools he still has in consideration are Penn State, Mississippi, Arkansas, FSU, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana and Maryland. “It’s not a top, but those are some I’m considering,” he said. Something else that stood out for Metcalf from his time at UM? “The coaches were supposed to be off after the spring game but they stayed back with me, took their time and showed me around campus, made me feel at home,” Metcalf said.
