Here is the Sept. 13 edition of The Daily Recap presented by JFQ Lending.
Injury update
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart offered up two injury updates on a pair of receivers.
AD Mitchell, who injured his ankle during Georgia’s 33-0 win over Samford, was unable to practice on Monday. However, Smart is not ruling Mitchell out for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.
“AD is not (practicing Monday). We’re hopeful he’s able to make it,” Smart. “Ron (Courson) is optimistic, but you know how that goes. It’s more about where he goes, and where he’s at.”
If Mitchell is unable to go, that could mean more playing time for freshman receiver Dillon Bell, who caught his first career touchdown against Samford.
Smart also spoke about speedy receiver Arian Smith, saying he will return in 2022. Smith injured his ankle during fall camp.
“Yeah, Arian is coming back. He's been able to do some weight-bearing running. He's been hitting some good speeds,” Smart said. “We don't know when he's going to be back. It's doubtful he's back this week. But he's back running and he's not 100 percent. But I’m excited for what he's been able to do. He's not cutting and breaking. … He's getting better, and you can see it in his eyes. He's getting healthier. We just got no idea when he's going to be back.”
Smart: No. 1 ranking is ‘irrelevant’
In the least surprising news of the week, Smart downplayed the significance of Georgia’s AP No. 1 ranking.
“It’s irrelevant,” Smart said. “I’m a lot more worried about how we execute a combo block than I am worried about where we’re ranked, and hopefully the kids feel the same way.”
That message trickled down to Georgia’s players, at least when it comes to how they are addressing it publicly.
“I don’t want to get into that, and I want to stress to the guys not to get into that. That’s something that changes every week,” center Sedrick Van Pran said. “One week we may be No. 1, the next week it may change. The thing for us is to just make sure we uphold the Georgia standard and make sure we play the way we need to play, to win games.”
