Here is the Dec. 3 edition of The Daily Recap presented by JFQ Lending.

Seniors could break record

Georgia’s senior class is on pace to break a record for the most wins during its duration with the program. This group of seniors is 42-9 and has at least Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt and a bowl game to play. If the Bulldogs are able to make up their previously postponed game against Missouri, that will give them three games to set the record.

As it stands, the 2005 and 2009 senior classes hold the record with 44 wins. With three wins, this group has a chance to break the record by one game.

“Yeah, we talked about it leading into the last game, once in a conversation we had on Friday. I've belabored the point,” head coach Kirby Smart said. “I just think it’s something that keeps you motivated. If that’s something that motivates you, you know. Legacy is important; that means something. Certainly, there have been a lot of great senior classes. I told them that when we were just talking about it with last year’s seniors, that they had the ability to tie it.”

If Georgia is able to make up the Missouri game, that will allow it to complete its SEC-only 10-game schedule. But if this season wasn’t affected by Covid-19, the Bulldogs would have had a 12-game regular season with a bowl game.

“If this year had been a more traditional year with the extra games, these seniors probably could have shattered it—they could have beaten it by two or three,” Smart said. “With only the 10 games and the possibility of a bowl game, they have to win out to put themselves in that position. I know that it matters to a lot of them.”

West commits to Georgia

Georgia landed its first five-star prospect of the class of 2022 with defensive tackle Tyre West (Tift County/Tifton) committing to the program. West’s familiarity with Georgia helped seal the deal.

"I've visited Georgia about 10 times, so I know a lot about them,” West said. “The coaches always call me, they make sure I'm good, and I just relate to the coaches at Georgia.”

In addition, another big part to earning West’s commitment was defensive line coach Tray Scott.

"Tray Scott is like a dad to me. All the coaches are like fathers to me," West said. "Through the recruiting process, they talked to me about life, about school, about football—pretty much everything."

All that stated, this has been a decision made for quite some time.

"I would say I have known for probably a year or so that I wanted to go to Georgia,” West said. “The more I got to know them, the more I could tell the Georgia coaches are real. That means a lot to me. During my 10th grade year, I really started talking to coach Scott and coach Smart a lot more, and that is when I started feeling it for Georgia.

"They had been recruiting me before, but we just started talking more and getting more comfortable. The whole staff started recruiting me, I started to get to know them, and it took off from there. They constantly check on me, they care about me and Georgia is the perfect match for me."

Each of the four class of 2022 commits are from the state of Georgia, with West, the state’s highest-ranked player, being the early headliner. The prospects all rank inside the Rivals’ top 250, indicating this is a class off to an excellent start.

The 2022 class is strong defensively, with Georgia able to now take its attention to other some key spots. Jake Reuse compiled a list of players who could be next on the list in the class of 2022, including five-star defensive tackle Walter Nolen (St. Benedict/Cordova, Tenn.), five-star defensive tackle Travis Shaw (Grimsley/Greensboro, N.C.) and four-star defensive end Mykel Williams (Hardaway/Columbus).

Film review

Trent Smallwood broke down West’s film to see what the Bulldogs are getting in the big defensive tackle. In addition, Smallwood was impressed with what he saw in person in last Friday’s Tift County-Grayson game.

“After watching the 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive lineman in person last weekend, the aspect that impressed me most was the versatility that West will bring to the defensive line group,” Smallwood wrote. “He is quick enough to be a Malik Herring type five-technique player, but also has the strength to play inside as a three-technique. He'd be a little undersized at 270 pounds playing defensive tackle in the SEC, but he has a frame that could put on 25 to 30 pounds pretty easily.

"West told me he wants to play defensive end, which would likely be his best position with his explosive first step. I do think his versatility would allow him to move inside on passing downs and be a disruptive factor from the tackle position.”

Green sets commitment date

Four-star defensive back Nyland Green (Newton/Covington) will announce his commitment on Dec. 8. Green will choose between Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and Tennessee.
