Senior first baseman Adam Sasser has been dismissed from the Georgia baseball team after allegedly making racists comments directed toward Bulldog quarterback Justin Fields during last Saturday’s football game against Tennessee.

Georgia officials confirmed the decision Wednesday in an email, citing both athletic director Greg McGarity and head baseball coach Scott Stricklin.

A member of the 2018 All-SEC Second Team, Sasser is Georgia’s leading returning hitter after hitting .317 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI, helping to lead the Bulldogs to a host spot in the 2018 NCAA Athens Regional.

Sasser sent out a Tweet apologizing for his actions. He said he later spoke to Fields.

Wednesday's news comes one day after Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the comments.

"That's not who we are at Georgia. We're trying to build a program on tolerance and mutual respect,” Smart said. “You can’t control what people say, but expectations are that people who are part of our program, attending our games, share the same beliefs that we do. It’s sad that that something like this would happen. I’m disappointed, but it doesn’t affect our family here, our unit here. Our kids have been great. It’s not something I’ve had to address with them.”

Smart did speak with Fields, though, who was the target of the racially charged comments.

“I’ve addressed it with Justin and that’s the most important thing,” said Smart. “Justin is great. He’s worried about Vanderbilt.”

Safety Richard LeCounte agreed.

“That’s definitely not something that we condone here, you know what I’m saying?” Bulldog cornerback Richard LeCounte said. “I don’t really know what happened, but what I do know, stuff like that is not condoned.”
