Tuesday night's 76-68 win over Vanderbilt provided the Bulldogs with a nice bounce-back after losing in overtime to Florida last Saturday.
Initial thoughts:
• Turnovers have been a big bugaboo for the Bulldogs all season, but at least on Saturday, they were able to keep that portion of their play under control, committing just six, including only one in the first half.
• Yante Maten said he needed to start playing smarter basketball after fouling out for the third time this year against Florida. He certainly did on Tuesday. Maten committed just one foul, that coming with 3:08 left to play.
• Head coach Mark Fox had to be pleased with his team’s perimeter defense. Vanderbilt came into play as the top 3-point shooting team in the SEC but didn't get warm until the second half, converting 10-of-31 after making just 1-of-9 the first half.
• The game wouldn't have been as close if Georgia had done a better job from the free throw line. The Bulldogs converted just 22-of-34 from the charity stripe.
Turning point:
After leading by as many as 13 points in the first half, Georgia saw its lead shrink to just three points with just over 15 minutes to play. But that’s as close as the Commodores would get. Back-to-back three-pointers by J.J. Frazier and Juwan Parker got the Bulldogs back on track before a steal and a jam by freshman Jordan Harris pushed the margin to nine, 50-41. The Commodores never got closer than five the rest of the way.
Did you know?
Parker has now reached double-digits in scoring in seven straight games after Tuesday night’s 17-point performance. He only scored 10 or more points in one of Georgia’s first 11 games.
Leading Scorers:
Maten paced the Bulldogs with 21 points, followed by Parker with 17, Frazier with 15 and Derek Ogbeide with 11, his fourth double-figure contest this year.
Record: Georgia improves to 12-6, 4-2 in the SEC. Vanderbilt falls to 8-10 and 2-4.
