Although he declined to offer any details, Georgia head coach Mark Fox did drop one piece of information regarding sophomore guard Jordan Harris during Monday’s SEC Teleconference.
Not only is Harris suspended indefinitely as was announced Saturday, but according to Fox, he will not practice with the team while his suspension is being served.
“Per our release, he has been suspended, will not practice with the team,” Fox said. “I’ll have no more comments about it.”
Harris, who is averaging 3.5 points per game, did not travel with the team to Starkville, Miss, where the Bulldogs (13-9, 4-6) dropped a 72-57 decision to Mississippi State.
Georgia travels to Vanderbilt for a Wednesday night showdown with the Commodores (8:30 p.m., SEC Network) before returning home to host Auburn Saturday at 3:30.
Fox did offer some intel on freshman guard Teshaun Hightower, who has missed the Bulldogs’ last three games.
“He had a confirmed case of the flu so that’s obviously put him on the bench,” Fox said. “He was finally able to shoot some balls Friday night. He had not practiced all week, but he has had the flu.”
With Hightower and Harris both out, that finally opened the door for sophomore Tyree Crump, who got the start against Mississippi State and finished with 13 points.
“With Teshaun having been sick, we wanted to play Tyree more and with Mississippi State playing two point guards we decided the best matchup was to go ahead and play our two points,” Fox said. “Similar to last year, he’s made progress throughout the season with his approach. He’s obviously more comfortable but still has a way to go. But he’s been a big boost for us shooting the ball.”
Senior Pape Diatta also came off the bench and chipped in with 12 points after converting all four of his three-point attempts.
For Diatta, it was just his seventh game of the year after suffering a severe ankle injury prior to preseason.
“Pape had just an awful ankle sprain that cost him the entire fall. He didn’t do any of the workouts because of his ankle and he played with a big plastic brace up until the New Year,” Fox said. “He really spent the month of January trying to build more strength in the ankle and the ability to play and move with just tape. So, he’s been practicing better, moving better and finally was able to get in the game and perform. He’s practiced pretty well the last couple of weeks, but he was so far behind that working him back in has been a challenge.
“He’s starting to play well and practice well, but that’s because he’s finally healthy.”
