Two four-run innings helped lift Georgia to a 10-3 win against Charleston Southern on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs move to 5-3 and two and a half weeks remain before Southeastern Conference play begins.
Senior designated hitter Daniel Nichols, who was hitting .192 before the win, led Georgia’s offensive efforts by going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a sacrifice fly.
Nichols said he made a minor adjustment at the plate, gripping his hands a little higher on the bat. The strategy clearly worked.
“When you’re a senior, you have a little more weight on your shoulders,” Nichols said. “And when your team’s not doing as well as you want them to, you feel a little more pressure.”
Pitcher Connor Jones, who mostly worked as a reliever last season, started and held CSU to four hits and two runs in seven innings. Meanwhile, CSU worked six pitchers, striking out five and walking 10 batters. Georgia had nine hits and held CSU to three runs, playing one of its most complete games so far this season
“We made plays when it was hit to us, we threw strikes for the most part, we had good at-bats, I thought we hit the ball better than really what the scoreboard reflected on hits,” head coach Scott Stricklin said. “If we can play like this, do what we’re supposed to do and stay within ourselves, we can be a very good team.”
In the third inning, catcher Skyler Weber singled to right field. Then, centerfielder Stephen Wrenn walked to first base, pushing Weber to second. All left fielder Keegan McGovern had to do was walk to first and Georgia had the bases loaded. After that, the Bulldogs strung together some offense.
Designated hitter Daniel Nichols flied out to centerfield, scoring Weber and pushing Wrenn and McGovern forward. Third baseman Mitchell Webb grounded out, scoring Wrenn and moving McGovern forward.
A single by first baseman Adam Sasser scored McGovern and a double by L.J. Talley eventually scored Sasser, giving Georgia a 4-0 lead. Georgia didn’t hit any home runs, but it didn’t need to, even though CSU had cut Georgia’s lead in half with a pair of runs by the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs’ four-run seventh inning was another combined effort by the lineup and its two-run eighth inning sealed the win by way of McGovern’s RBI double and freshman first baseman Patrick Sullivan’s RBI single.
