As is often the case after a team experiences an exceptional season, it appears the Georgia football program will make its mark on the upcoming NFL Draft, opening on April 26. Until then, piquing the interest of many UGA enthusiasts will be the NFL Combine, which begins next week exhibiting 10 former Bulldogs, tying the mark for the most players from Georgia to attend the annual scouting event since 1987. Of course, also leading up to the draft are the various NFL mock drafts which, for this year, present the likelihood of an abundant number of chosen Bulldogs, as well.
The following are the latest updates on Georgia players featured in five online NFL Mock Drafts, all of which forecast at least three, if not the draft’s entire seven rounds (player is followed by projected round, overall pick in parenthesis, and selecting NFL team):
Notably, the three NFL mock drafts above which project all seven rounds each have seven Bulldogs being selected, consisting of eight different players. The most Georgia players ever chosen in a single NFL Draft were eight, resulting twice—2002 and 2013. Perhaps more so, four of the five mock drafts forecast at least three Bulldogs being picked in the first two rounds, including WalterFootball.com, which projects five in rounds one and two—Roquan Smith, Sony Michel, Trenton Thompson, Nick Chubb, and Isaiah Wynn.
Speaking of first- and second-round picks, the following are the Georgia players selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft from 2007 to 2017 (player is followed by what year’s NFL Draft he was chosen, in what round and at what overall selection, and his Rivals star ranking and overall prospect rank coming out of high school):
From directly above, perhaps a little surprising, and somewhat unsatisfactory, is the fact that only nine Georgia players were selected in the first two rounds of the last 11 NFL Drafts from 2007-2017—especially considering 22 Bulldogs were drafted in rounds one and two during the previous 11-year period (1996-2006) and, as mentioned, the cited NFL mock drafts for this year project as many as five Bulldogs picked in the first and second rounds.
Maybe not that surprising, those five projected first- and second-round selections—Smith, Michel, Thompson, Chubb, and Wynn—have something in common with the nine Georgia players chosen in the first two rounds from 2007-2017: all were Rivals four- or five-star prospects coming out of high school.
