The Daily Recap: UGA keeps recruiting momentum going

Here is the Dec. 4 edition of The Daily Recap presented by JFQ Lending.

Another one

Georgia landed its second class of 2022 commit in as many days when four-star defensive end Darris Smith (Appling County/Baxley) announced his pledge to the program. Smith followed five-star defensive tackle Tyre West’s decision to commit to Georgia on Wednesday.

Smith was offered by Georgia on Oct. 20 and decided now was the time to go ahead and commit to the Bulldogs.

"I have been thinking about it since I got the offer," Smith said. "I was on the phone with coach Smart about two weeks ago and we felt comfortable talking to each other. That is when I started thinking about committing to Georgia."

Smith became the fifth commit in Georgia’s 2022 class.

"I am just excited about committing to big school like Georgia and it feels like a big dream right now. I was always a fan of Georgia and that is a big reason why I committed. They are the home-state team, we run the same defense they do and the coaches are awesome.

"We have been talking about what it would be like there, how practice would be and things like that. I am excited about it."

What Georgia is getting

Chad Simmons explained what kind of player the Bulldogs are getting in Smith below.

Opposition research

Anthony Dasher spoke with VandySports.com publisher Chris Lee about the state of Vanderbilt football, which—newsflash—isn’t good. Lee, based on his sources, also broke down the decision for Vanderbilt to pull Sarah Fuller from the soccer team to be the program’s place-kicker.

In addition, Lee mentioned there’s a chance another place-kicker could get a look in Saturday’s game against Georgia.

Starks talks top three

Class of 2022 four-star athlete Malaki Starks (Jefferson/Jefferson) has trimmed his recruiting options to Alabama, Clemson and Georgia.

"I just felt like (these three) recruited me the most," Starks told Jake Reuse. "I have a special connection with all three of those, and I'm real tight with all of them."

When it comes to Georgia, Starks likes the bond he’s created with head coach Kirby Smart.

"I guess it's just the person he is. He's an amazing coach,” Starks said. “I got to see him coach one time and the way, when I went to camp, the way he coached us, he coached us like we were his own players," Starks said. "I just liked the way he pushes people. I want to be pushed to be my best, and I know he's someone that will do that for me."

Lady Dogs win 1,000

With a 66-45 win over East Carolina, the Georgia women’s basketball team win its 1,000th career victory. In the SEC, only Georgia and Tennessee have now accomplished this feat.

The Lady Dogs are now one of 16 teams nationally to have 1,000 wins in program history.
