Inside linebacker Reggie Carter missed his second straight day of practice on Tuesday but head coach Kirby Smart is still hopeful Carter will be ready for Saturday night’s game at South Carolina (7:30, SEC Network).

“He’s got a mild concussion,” Smart said of the junior defender, who had to excuse himself from an interview on Monday.

With Carter out, outside linebacker Chuks Amaechi practiced with the inside backers on Tuesday to allow the defense get through practice without being a man down.

“We don’t know about Reggie yet, but we’re hoping he will be able to go,” Smart said. “But he could not practice today.”

If Carter cannot play, either sophomore Juwan Taylor or sophomore Rashad Roundtree would move into the No. 3 spot at inside linebacker behind Roquan Smith and Natrez Patrick.

• Nose tackle John Atkins (ankle) and defensive end David Marshall (concussion) both returned to practice on Tuesday.
