It's official: Eason is starting

Jacob Eason is making his debut as starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia sports information director Claude Felton made the announcement to beat writers Friday morning via email.

This comes less than 12 hours after sources told UGASports.com and others that Eason took all the reps with the first team, although as late as Thursday night head coach Kirby Smart claimed during his weekly call-in show that a decision has not been made.

“I understand that everybody wants to know and you have a right to know once we know,” Smart told host Scott Howard. “And we don’t know right now. Again, it’s a situation for us where we feel like both young men did a good job.”

Those comments came one day after Smart told XM Sirius Radio that he and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney needed to make a decision soon between Eason and Greyson Lambert, who started last weekend's season opener against North Carolina.

That decision has apparently been made.

Eason will become the first true freshman to start a game for Georgia since Matt Stafford in 2006 three games into the 2006 campaign.

The former five-star made his debut with the Bulldogs in last week’s 33-24 win over the Tar Heels, completing 8 of 12 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown, a 17-yard shuttle pass to Isaiah McKenzie. He later completed a 51-yard pass to McKenzie on a key third-down play.
