Just get them on the ground

Getting to the quarterback wasn’t necessarily a problem for Georgia’s pass-rushers last fall. Getting them on the ground, well, that was sometimes another story.

Although the Bulldogs recorded 29 sacks as a unit last fall, outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter knows it should have been more.

“When you get your hands on them, they’ve got to go down,” Carter said. “It’s not always going to be a big hit and you don’t have to leave your feet, so we’re just working on getting them down, not do too much when we get them down in the pocket.”

Carter said that’s something both he and fellow outside backer Davin Bellamy are determined to improve on doing this fall.

Last year, both players recorded five sacks each, tying defensive lineman Trenton Thompson for the team lead.

“We’ve just got to grab them,” Carter said. "They’re quarterbacks. At the end of the day, they don’t want to get hit. As long as you get them down, introduce them to the ground, you can pretty much get some sacks.”

If G-Day was any indication, it would appear getting to the quarterback won’t be a problem, either.

Although rules prohibited either Jacob Eason or Jake Fromm from getting hit, Georgia defenders were credited with five sacks in the game, although Carter said it realistically should have been more.

“It was a scrimmage, Coach (Kirby) Smart wanted to see what the offense can do,” Carter said. “But you’ve got give us the sacks. You’ve got to give us the sacks.”
