COLUMBIA, S.C. – Another opportunity to pick up a quality road win slipped through the collective fingers of the Georgia basketball team, which fell to South Carolina, 77-75.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 13-10 overall, 4-6 in the SEC while the Gamecocks improved to 19-14 overall and 9-1 in the SEC.
While the game featured 18 lead changes, the Bulldogs were unable to keep the lead when it counted the most as the Gamecocks regained the advantage with just under 10 minutes to play, and never got any closer than the final score.
Below, check out what we all learned:
Who did what
Despite the loss, Yante Maten showed why he’s one of the best in the SEC.
The junior was particularly a force down low as most of his 18 points came from down in the paint. For those counting, Maten – who fouled out with 7.7 seconds left. has scored in double figures in all but one of Georgia’s 23 games this year.
South Carolina’s trio of Duane Notice, D.J. Dozier and Sindarious Thornwell were even more impressive. The trio combined for 54 of South Carolina’s 73 points, with Dozier leading the way with 21 and Thornwell chipping in with 18. The trio also went a combined 9-15 from three-point range with Thornwell and Notice both going 4-fo4-7.
J.J. Frazier had another solid game.
The senior finished with 18 points while Juwan Parker added 11
Turning point
The game was tied at 51 with 9:34 to play but that’s when the game got away.
In a hurry.
South Carolina went on a 7-0 run, including a three-pointer by Thornwell to make the score 59-51 with 7:21 to play.
A free throw by Maten stopped the bleeding for the Bulldogs, who came back to close within three points at 62-58 with 4:36 left.
But Georgia got no closer than two as another three-pointer by Notice pushed the margin back to seven before twice getting within two in the final minute of play.
Ogbeide becoming a rebounding force
Although he’s still inconsistent from scoring standpoint, Fox has to love what he’s seeing from Derek Ogbeide in terms of his rebounding process.
The former Pebblebrook standout recorded his seventh double-digit performance of the year with 11 against the Gamecocks. This latest effort comes on the heels of his 18-point, 13-rebound showing in Tuesday’s overtime loss at Kentucky.
Maten closing in on Dominque
You don’t really think of blocks when you’re talking about Maten, but with four Saturday he tied the great Dominique Wilkins for fourth place on the team’s all-time list for blocks.
Maten came into the game four shy of Wilkins. Maten and Wilkins now have 142.
