Georgia has been making remarkable gains in its 2017 recruiting class and Sunday added another very important piece when four-star Deangelo Gibbs gave his commitment during the Under Armour All-American game.

At 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Gibbs is the nation’s ninth-ranked athlete and 141st overall prospect according to Rivals.com. He choose the Bulldogs over Alabama and about 30 other offers.

"I just want to play with a group of guys that I've grown up with," Gibbs said during his announcement on ESPN.

That wasn't the only reason.

"I've always liked Georgia. It's an option close to home and I know a lot of people there,” Gibbs told Rivals.com. “They have always been there and the coaching staff has told me how bad they want me there."

There’s no doubt the coaches need Gibbs

Although he starred at both wide receiver and defensive back for state champion Grayson High School, Gibbs is expected to play safety for Georgia once he arrives on campus as an early enrollee.

"I'm going to give as much as I can give," Gibbs said on TV. "I expect a lot. I expect a lot from them and I expect a lot from me. I'm ready and prepared to go."

Gibbs gives the Bulldogs 21 verbal commitments for the Class of 2017 and is the third slated to play in the secondary, joining William Poole and Richard LeCounte.

Bulldog coaches made sure they impressed upon Gibbs how big a role he would fill.

“That is their message,” Gibbs told UGASports recently. “They’ve told me they need DB’s and they need guys like me to come in and make an impact.”

He will apparently get the opportunity to show just how versatile he is.

“It’s pretty much up to me,” Gibbs said. “They said they’ll try me at different spots and see wherever I’m comfortable, whether it’s safety, corner, or wide receiver. I’m just here for the team.”

More to come.
